主イエスキリストの恵みと平安が豊かに与えられますように。
私が会社勤めをしていた時、同僚が亡くなった。 ここにおられる何人かの方はご存知だが、彼はすい臓がんを患らい、医者からは、数ヶ月の命とも言われた。 しかし、夫婦でキリストを信じ、洗礼を受けたあと、この世からは去られた。信仰を告白し、洗礼を受けた時から永遠の命が与えられており、奥様にとって、夫の死を体験しながらも、そこに復活の命を確信でき、大きな慰めがあった。 彼が亡くなる数週間前に、日本の本社からは会社の最高責任者が出張で来られ、死期の近づいていた彼の家を尋ね、お見舞いに行った。 彼は本当に痩せほどっていた。 しかし、私は彼の中に、なにか力強いものを実感することができた。やせ細った彼を見舞ったあと、私と何人かの現地社員も誘っていっしょに食事をした。そのとき、社長は「人間死んだらそれで終わりだよね。」ということを語った。 私はその言葉にどうしようもない憤りを覚え、それから、数ヶ月後に社長に向かって私は、説教をしてしまった。 「この世の命が終わっても、復活の命があります。」と強い口調で話した。私は、その説教がいずれは会社を辞め、最高の知らせを世に宣教する者になる決定打になったような気がしている。
さて今日与えられた福音書、マルタとマリアの最愛の弟、ラザロが病になるというシーンからはじまる。病名は書いていないが、深刻で治療を一刻も争う、急性肺炎とかあるいは、心臓発作とかだったかもしれない。 当時、電話もなければ救命救急のためのサービスもない時代、マルタとマリアにとって頼りになるのは、イエスだった。人を遣いに出し、イエスに「あなたの大切なラザロが病で死にそうです。」ということを伝えさせた。それでも、イエスは、すぐにベタニアに向かおうとせず、二日間も同じところにいた。そして、イエスはユダヤ地方に向かうものの、イエスの到着３日前には、ラザロは死んでしまった。 マルタはイエスが来たと聞いて、迎えに出るが、挨拶もせず「主よ、あなたがここにいてくださったらラザロは死ななかったのでしょうに。」と言う。イエスへの文句のような言葉で始る。聖書の中でマルタが出てくるもう一つの話、イエスと弟子たちを家に迎えたとき、マルタばかりが給仕をしていて、マリアはただイエスの話を聞いていたのを不満に思い、「マリアに手伝うように言ってください。」とイエスにマルタが言ったのを覚えている方もいるのではないだろうか。 マルタはそういう女性のようだ。それでも、イエスはマルタを大好き。 一方マリアは、今回は、マリアも、マルタと同じように「主よ、あなたがここにいらしてくださったら、ラザロは死ななかったでしょうに。」と言う。やはりイエスへの不満のような言葉とともに、マリアは泣き崩れる。またいっしょにいたユダヤ人たちも泣いていた。
そのような状況に対して、イエスは憤りを覚えられた。 イエスの憤りは、決して、マルタが、そしてあの従順なマリアまでも、遅く到着したイエスに不満を述べたからというのでは全くない。 それは、イエスはラザロを蘇らせる目的で、ここに来ているのに、人々はそんなことはつゆもしらず、あきらめていたことにあると思われる。 また、「イエスは盲人の視力を回復することはできたが、ラザロを復活させることはできない。」と決め付けているような捨て台詞を話すようなユダヤ人もいて、何もわかっていない人々に、イエスは再び、心を痛め、憤りを覚える。
そして、イエスはここから必死になる。墓の前に置いてある石をどけるように指図する。 マルタは「四日も経っているから、もう臭います。」と言うが、「信じるなら神の栄光が見られると言っていたではないか。」と強い口調で応答する。何人かの人々はイエスの言う通りに、石をどける。 そして、イエスは「いつも祈りを聞いてくださる父なる神に感謝し、ここにいる人々が、私があなたから遣わされたことを信じるために。」と祈られたあと、「ラザロ出て来なさい！」と叫ぶ。 そして、布に包まれたラザロが墓から出てきて蘇る。
この話を、レントに読んでいるが、いったいどういう意味があるのだろうか。イースターとどういう関係があるのか、あるいはラザロの復活とイエスの復活はどう違うのか？ イエスは、肉体的に死んだ人でも、イエスの祈りによって生き返らせることができるという話はすごい。しかし、注意したいことは、ラザロのこの話は、たとえ、ラザロは肉体的な蘇りが起こっても、ラザロはいずれは肉体的には亡くなったのだと思う。
そのことを考えるとき、イエスの復活はラザロの蘇りとは種類の違う復活であることを覚えておきたいと思う。これから２週間、さらに復活節の７週間の間にもっともっと大きなキリストの復活について触れていきたいと思う。
今日のメッセージのポイントの一つは、マルタやマリアまでもいっしょにイエスに文句を言い、イエスは二度も憤られた様子を話した。 そこには、イエスはマルタやマリアが文句と言ったから心を憤ったのはなく、「死んだらそれでおしまい。」と思った、マルタやマリア、そして、周りのユダヤ人たちへの憤りだったのだと思う。
人の死は神の目にあってそれは滅びではない。ラザロの復活の出来事は、ユダヤの指導者たちがイエスの抹殺をたくらむ決定的な要因になった。 そして、イエスはユダヤの指導者、ローマの政治家たち、そしてすべての民衆、弟子たちをも巻き込み、十字架の死へと追い込む。にもかかわらず、神の子イエスは復活し、すべての人々への赦しと永遠の命を示されることになる。今日のラザロの復活の出来事は、十字架の死によって、死を滅ぼす、歴史上、最大の出来事につながる、決定打のようなもの。肉体的な死は、決して滅びではない。 アーメン
“The Call to the Cross”
John 11:1-44

When I was working for a Southern California company, one of my colleagues died. As some of you know, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told that he had only several months to live. However, he believed in Jesus Christ, was baptized, and then he left this earthly life. At the same time his wife was baptized and several months later his daughter was baptized, as well. Therefore, they believed in his eternal life and were comforted by Jesus’ peace. I have never told this story to anyone before, so please listen carefully. As a matter of fact, a few weeks before he died, the president of the company visited California. I took him to Mr. K’s home visit him. Mr. Kyu was very thin but he could still talk with us and I felt his strength in the Holy Spirit, even though he was physically very weak. The president and I, along with several managers of our US subsidiary had dinner after our visit to Mr. Kyu. At the table, the president said, “Once you die, it is the end, isn’t it?” I was greatly disturbed by what he said….then several months later, when I had a chance to speak with the president more privately, I preached to him saying, “Although you mentioned that when you die, you think it is the end; I do not think death is the end. There is eternal life after earthly death. Mr. K is still living with Christ, Mr. President.” When I reflect on my tenure with the company, I think that was a clear call to the cross or defining moment leading me to resign from the company and to become a proclaimer of the Good News.
The Gospel text today starts with the Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, becoming sick. Although the Bible doesn’t name the disease, it was life threatening and required immediate medical attention. If one were to speculate it could’ve been pneumonia or a heart attack. There was no 911 or other modern medical equipment, but Jesus was living nearby at that time. So Martha and Mary sent a person to where Jesus was and let him know that Lazarus was seriously ill. However, Jesus did not head to Bethany right away where the family was located, and he stayed where he was for two more days. Then he and his disciples went to Bethany in Judea. While they were traveling, Lazarus died. Martha exited her home to meet Jesus. Instead of a greeting she said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” It was like a complaint…do you remember what Martha said while Jesus and his disciples were visiting? Martha complained that Mary was not helping prepare food and serve their guests. But Jesus still loved Martha, even though her priorities were wrong. As for Mary, this time, she said the same thing that Martha said to Jesus, weeping and kneeling before him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” The sisters’ neighbors (the Jews) cried and even Jesus wept too.
Jesus was troubled, not by the fact that Martha and Mary criticized him, but because despite his purpose of resurrecting Lazarus people doubted his Word. Also, there was a guy who judged Jesus saying, “Even though Jesus could heal the man born blind, he could not raise Lazarus.” People did not get what Jesus was trying to do and they just thought Lazarus was dead and put him into the tomb. Therefore, Jesus was greatly troubled again by people’s lack of faith. Then Jesus started his deliberate efforts. He ordered people to remove the stone sealing the tomb. Martha said, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.” In response, Jesus intently asked Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” Afterward, several people removed the stone. Then, Jesus prayed to the Father, “I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” Then he shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth and his face wrapped in a cloth.
We are listening to this story while we are going through Lent. What does it mean to us? This is a great story that Jesus could resurrect Lazarus from the tomb. However, it’s worth mentioning that this was a physical resurrection and it doesn’t mean that Lazarus could physically live forever.
In two weeks, we will experience and celebrate Easter, i.e. Jesus’ death and resurrection. We should remember that Jesus’ resurrection is different from Lazarus’ resurrection. How does Lazarus’ resurrection relate to the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Today, we read the Gospel text that says “Jesus was greatly troubled” not only once but twice, not because of Martha and Mary’s complaints though. Jesus was troubled by the fact that people thought physical death was the end of life and that these people despaired. Jesus knew that through the Father and the Son, God could overcome even physical death.
In God’s eyes, people’s deaths are not the end. Jesus resurrected Lazarus. This incident allowed the Jewish leaders to scheme to get rid of Jesus. Later, the Roman leaders and even the crowd that welcomed him earlier called for his death. Lazarus’ resurrection hastened Jesus to the Cross. Through the Crucifixion, Jesus was raised from the dead, showing us the forgiveness given to all the crucified people; granting us eternal life. Lazarus’ resurrection was the clear call to the cross. The Crucifixion allowed Jesus to destroy death and grant eternal life. We need not feel doomed because Christ is with us! Amen.
