使徒言行録2:1-21

誕生日を迎えるとどんな気持ちだろうか？ 「最後から二番目の恋」というドラマがある。２年前の人気ドラマでアメリカでも今年のはじめだったか放送されていた。 あまりの人気のため、日本では、「続：最後から二番目の恋」 が放送されているらしい。
その一部を紹介したい。 中井貴一が演じる長倉和平。妻を病気で失い、一人娘と妹たちと鎌倉に住む。 小泉今日子が演じる吉野千明は独身、キャリア。長倉和平の家の隣に住む。この二人が主役のドラマだ。吉野千明の46 歳の誕生日に長倉和平はアットホームな誕生会を開催する。
しかし、千明は、24歳位の誕生日ならまだしも、なんで46歳の誕生日を祝うのか、と文句を言う。 長倉和平は、妻を亡くしているだけに、そういうことには敏感な男性。きっぱりと言う。「命を与えられたということに感謝しないといけない。そして、４６歳という年にも感謝、２４歳よりももっと価値があるんだ。」
ドラマを見ながら、誕生日の意味に考えさせられた時だった。 吉野千明とはちがって私は男性だが、それでも、年はとりたくないとついつい言ったてしまう自分に、反省を迫られた気がした。
さて、今日は聖霊降臨祭、ペンテコステである。 ペンテコステは、よく教会の誕生日とも言われる。教会活動らしいことが、市民の間に広まっていったのが、このペンテコステがきっかけになっていることで誕生日とされている。 しかし、今、教会活動らしい活動というのはどういうことなのだろうか。与えられている聖書から三つのことを話してみたい。
ひとつめは、今日の第一日課に描かれている様子から話したい。 ユダヤ教の過ぎ越しの日から50日(ペンテコステ)も伝統的なお祭りのひとつ、それはすなわち、主イエスの復活から50日と同じ時期だったが、人々が集まっていると、とにかく激しい風が吹いてくる。 そして、炎のような舌が別れ別れになって一人一人の上にとどまる。
集まっていた人々というのは、いろいろな地方出身の者たちが集まっており、第一言語も異なりいろいろな風習や理解も異なる考え方をする人々たちだった。 しかし聖霊という神の力が働いて相互理解できるということが起こったことを使徒言行録は伝えている。言うなれば人間と人間の間の関係回復が今日話したいことの第一番目のポイント。
二番目、与えられた福音書では、主の復活日の夕方のことが描かれている。 その中で、イエスは息をかけて言われる。 「聖霊を受けなさい。だれの罪でも、あなたがたが赦せば、その罪は赦される。だれの罪でも、あなたがたが赦さなければ、赦されないまま残る。」
イエスが息を吹きかける前に起こっていたことは、十字架に架かるイエスを見捨ててしまった弟子たちだったにもかかわらず、復活して姿を顕す神なるイエスは弟子たちを憐れみ、赦して、「あなたがたに平和があるように。」と話された。
そこには、どんな失敗をした弟子たちであろうが、神が弟子たちを憐れみ、愛し、赦す関係があるということ。 神なるイエスと弟子たち、神と人間との関係回復が可能であることを聖書は伝えている。聖霊という神の力の中で、神と人間の関係回復が第二のポイント。
三番目になるが、主の復活日に、イエスの息を受けていた弟子たちが、さらにペンテコステですさまじい聖霊の力を受けた後、どういうことが起こったかのポイントを話したい。 それは、さきほど読んだ使徒言行録2章の後半にあったように、ペトロは聖霊に力づけられて、最高の知らせを述べて、宣教するようになる。
過去にどんなにかひどい行いがあり、自分と神との関係を断絶したかと思えるようなことがあろうが、あるいは考え方の違いやら、間違いから人間関係が悪くなってしまったようなことがあっても、聖霊の力によって関係回復は可能。そのすばらしい知らせを伝えて、人々が洗礼にさずかり、聖餐にも与れるようになるように、弟子たちは行動しはじめる。つまり、教会活動をするようになっていく。 聖霊の働きにより、神を信じるものが、周りの人々が、洗礼をさずかり、聖餐を受けるように、働きかけるようになるということが、第三番目のポイント。
さて、主の年、主の降誕から2014年、聖霊降臨日からは数えると、教会誕生1984年くらいになるわけだが、その約1984歳の教会誕生日にあって、多いに祝いたい。それは、復活ルーテル教会においても、その1984 年存在してきているキリスト教会の一部として、人々が招かれ、その招きに応じた人々が、神との関係を回復し、また、異なる文化や考え方で育った者同士でも、聖霊の働きの中で、ひとつになって、聖餐に授かるということが起こっている。
その招きは、父なる神と子なるキリストである聖霊の働き、導きの中で起こっている。ひとりひとり、どうして、この教会に来るようになったかを振り返るとおわかりになると思う。
もちろん「だれかが誘いました。」ということはある。 しかし、そのだれかの誘いの背後には、聖霊が働いていた。 先週から来られた方は、事情があって次にどこかの教会に行くかを模索中だった。 そこに、LCRの英語部の方が現れ、そして、聖霊の導きの中で、この日本語のミニストリーに誘ってくれた。
実は、私たちは、1984年の年齢を刻んでいる教会、イエスキリストの大切な体の一部を担っている。 それぞれ、聖霊の働きがあって、であった方に、ちょっとでも教会の話をするとか、あるいは、教会の礼拝で奉仕するとか、あるいは、教会活動の一環で社会奉仕をするとか、活けるキリストの体の一部の細胞を成している。神が聖霊の働きの中で、教会をこの世に生んでくださったこと、そして、聖霊の働きが存続し続けている1984年に感謝し、また新たにイエスの息吹によって、わたしたち一人一人が教会活動のために遣わされますように。アーメン
What Does the Church’s Birthday Mean?

What do you think of your birthday? Do you feel happy about your birthday? There is a very popular Japanese drama series that was broadcast two years ago in Japan and in the Southern California last year. Since the first series was so popular, a second series is currently being broadcast in Japan.
In a part of that drama, Wahei Nagakura (portrayed by Kiichi Nakai), a widower, lives in Kamakura city with his middle school-aged daughter and his sisters. Chiaki Yoshino (portrayed by Kyoko Koizumi), a single, career-oriented woman, lives in a house next to Wahei. Wahei plans a 46th birthday party for Chiaki.
On her birthday, Chiaki complains “Why do you want to celebrate my 46th birthday? If I was 24 years old it would be a different story …” Wahei is sensitive about birthdays because he lost his wife. He tells Chiaki matter-of-factly, “You should be thankful for your birthday because you were born healthy and for the fact you have lived 46 years. This is great. This is more meaningful than a 24th birthday party.”
It made me think about my birthdays, too. Even though I am a man, unlike Chiaki, I often say that I do not want to grow older. I feel sorry for those occasions that I felt that I did not want to grow older.
Today is “Pentecost.” It is also called the birthday of the Christian Church. What happened on Pentecost triggered the Christian Church’s activities. What are the Church’s activities? Let me tell you three things:
The first thing is from the day of Pentecost that is written in the first text read today. Pentecost is a traditional Jewish festival celebrated the fiftieth day after Passover. During the festival of Passover in that year, Jesus was crucified and resurrected. In other words, on the fiftieth day after his resurrection, people gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost, but suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. What is going on in this scene?
People gathered in Jerusalem were from different nations, different cultures and spoke different languages. Many different native languages were spoken. Miraculously though, they were talking about the same things: the strong wind, the Holy Spirit, God’s tremendous power. They could understand each other because of the Holy Spirit. The first thing I want emphasize is that the Holy Spirit enables people, who understand things differently, to renew and strengthen their relationships, to understand each other, and to be one under God’s power.
The second matter is what’s written in the Gospel. We should remember the day Jesus was resurrected. On that day, Jesus breathed on the disciples and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Just before he breathed on them, he appeared, poured his mercy, and forgave the disciples by saying “Peace be with you” twice. His mercy is boundless, even though the disciples did nothing to prevent the crucifixion and ran away from him; Jesus still forgives them.
In that story, we learn that, even the disciples made terrible mistakes. However, there is an unconditional relationship between Jesus and Jesus loves his disciples despite their flaws. From here, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, His breath, enables the renewal and strengthening of the relationship between God, the disciples, and the people.
Thirdly, I would like to talk about what happened after the very strong Holy Spirit was breathed on them on the day of Pentecost. A prime example was written in the latter part of Acts that we read today. Although Peter was still questioning and was weak until Pentecost, with the help of the Holy Spirit, he became a brave proclaimer of the good news.
Even people who had harmed Jesus, harbored ill will toward their friends or previously were non-believers reconciled with God and the people by the power of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is wonderful news, the Gospel. By the help of the Holy Spirit, people may become proclaimers of the good news to other people. Proclaiming cannot be effectively done by just one person. The church itself becomes the proclaimer and hopes to share the good news with everyone.
This year is Anno Domini 2014, the Lord’s Year 2014. If we count from the year of the first Pentecost, this is about the 1984th year. On this birthday of the Christian Church, we celebrate with many blessings from the Lord. Even in this Resurrection Lutheran Church (started 50 years ago here in Huntington Beach), people are invited by the Holy Spirit and they gather to worship and work in Jesus’ name. People reconcile with God every week and people reconcile with each other every week through the Word of God and Holy Communion. Then, people are sent by the power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel to the world.
The invitation to come to church is happening by the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe you can understand this when you think, to yourself, about how you came to the Resurrection for the first time.
Of course, you may say someone invited you to this church. However, behind that invitation, there was the work of the Holy Spirit, the work of God, Jesus Christ. For example, one lady just came to this church for the first time last week. She was invited by an English speaking member of this congregation to come here while she was at work and at a time she was wondering about what church to attend. Behind this invitations, there is the work of the Holy Spirit.
Actually, each one of us is a part of the Church, the very important body of Christ. The Church is 1980 years old. All of us were guided to come to the Resurrection here today by the work of the Holy Spirit. And the same Holy Spirit enables us to work for God. Such as just inviting someone to come to church or supporting the church like serving as a communion helper, a liturgist, a receptionist, being a council member and so on are ways to do God’s work. Or you might do something for the community as a Christian. Why not celebrate and be thankful for the life of the church that was born into this world 1984 years ago? We should also be grateful for the 1980 years of continuous work on God’s behalf. Let us be renewed by the Holy Spirit, and sent out into the world, bravely and joyfully proclaiming the good news. Amen.
