ビートルズの晩年の名曲、レット・イット・ビーという曲をご存知の方、多いと思う。しかし、この名曲が今日読んだ福音書箇所と深い関係があることをご存知の方は、日本人の間では少ないのではないかと思う。
彼等が歌った多くの曲は、ジョンレノンとポールマッカートニーの合作とされているが、すくなくともこの歌詞は、ビートルズの活動がだんだんできなくなりそうな難しい時期に、ポールマッカートニーによって書かれたようだ。 事実、Let It Be をアルバムとしてリリースした後、ビートルズは４人での演奏活動はやめて、各自それぞれに活動するようになっていった。
その時の難しい状況というのは、Let It Beの最初の歌詞からしてもわかる。 ”When I find myself in times of trouble” つまり「自分が困難な時期にある時」といって詠いだしているわけで、ポールがどうしてよいかわからなかったような状況が想像できる。
そして、私たちの現実においても、仕事でも、こどもの教育問題にしても、親の介護にしても、あるいは自分自身の将来を考えてみても、自分でどうしてよいかわからず、悩んでしまう人生の現実がある。
さて、時代は2000年さかのぼる。どうしてよいかわからない状況は、イエスの母マリアにもやってきていた。ビートルズが解散しなければならないかどうかというより、種類の違う問題だと思うが、どうしてよいかどうかわからない状況には変わりはない。
マリアは大工職人のヨセフと婚約はしていた。 しかし、結婚前に、ガブリエルという天使がマリアに顕われて、「おめでとう、恵まれた方。」と話しかけてくる。 マリアはこの言葉に戸惑い、いったいこの挨拶は何のことかと考え込む。
すると、天使は「マリア、恐れることはない。 あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むが、その子をイエスと名付けるように。 その子は偉大な人となり、いと高き方の子と言われる。」と話をつづけた。
マリアは天使に言った。「まだ男性を知らない身に、どうして、そのようなことがありえますか。」 すると、天使は答える。「生まれる子は聖なる者、神の子と呼ばれる。 あなたの親類のエリサベトも、不妊の女とされていたのに身ごもっている。 神にできないことは何一つない。」
マリアはどんなにか悩んだことだろう。ただ悩むというより、たいへんな心配、恐怖感にさえ陥ったと思う。そもそも未婚の女性が妊娠することは、ユダヤの律法社会では考えられないこと。もし、妊娠しようものなら、ヨセフとの破談どころか、死刑にだってなりかねないようなことだ。
しかし、マリアは徹底的に謙虚に、ガブリエル、神の遣いの言葉を信じる。 そして、マリアは「わたしは主の僕です。 神のお言葉どおり、この身に成りますように。」と言った。
このマリアの言葉、新約聖書の原語であるギリシャ語には、「ゲノイト モイ カタ ト セマ ソウ」 となっており、「あなたの言葉通りに、この身になりますように」という意味。 英語で言えば “Let it be according to your word” となる。 最初のギリシャ語の「ゲノイト」が”Let It Be” 日本語で「成りますように。」 ここのLet It Be は、かならずしも、「ほうっておく」とか「成るようになれば良い。」という「無責任に放置する」という意味ではなく、It という代名詞の中に、「神のお言葉通り」ということが含まれている。
マリアは、自分ではどうしようもない事態で自分自身では何もできないけれども、この主のはしためである私を用いて、主のお考えが実現するようにと祈った。 それは信仰深い、受動的というよりむしろ自分を主のために用いてもらおうとする能動的ともいえる祈りなのだと思う。
今日与えられた、福音書箇所の中にある、マリアが天使ガブリエルを通して、神に祈った言葉から何をわたしたちは学んでいるのだろうか？ 私にはマリアのその「神のお言葉通り、この身になりますように」、”Let It Be”という言葉に、イエスの母、マリアの信仰深いすばらしい祈り、姿勢、さらに行動を見る思いがする。そして、その言葉は、さらにビートルズが歌って大ヒットしたLet It Beを今一度聞いて、私たちの信仰者としての祈りの姿勢、態度、そして行動を、さらに問われるような面があると思う。
ちなみに、さきほどのLet It Be の歌詞の続きを少し紹介すると、”When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.” 日本語に訳すと、「困ったことになって悩んでいると、マリア様がやってきて、すばらしい言葉をくれたんだ、身をゆだねなさい。と。」 ちなみに、ポールマッカートニーの母はポールが高校時代に亡くなっているが、その名前もマリアだった。 だから、ポールマッカートニーは自分の母親が夢で現れて、「Let It Be」と歌っていたのかとも思う。しかし、ポールは、イエスの母の言った言葉も意識していたように思う。いや、たとえポールが意識していなかったにしても、神の思いがそこに働いて、マリアの祈りの言葉がこめられていると思う。その証拠に、ポールはこの曲ができた後、アレサフランクリンというゴスペル歌手に歌ってもらっている。
私たちの人生、本当にどうしようもない、壁、難局に直面する。 たとえ自分では何もできないと思うときでも、そこには、必ず、少なくとも一つできることがある。 私たちは、神に祈ることができる。 「神の思いが成りますように」、”Let it be, according to your word.”と祈ることができる。 あるいは、主の祈りの中にある、「御心が天になるごとく、地にもなさせたまえ」と真剣にあきらめずに祈ることがどんなに大切なのかと思う。 そして私たちを神のために用いてくださいという態度をとるなかで、私たちがとるべき言動、行動へと導かれる。自分の思いではなく、神の思いにしたがって、生きるなかで、すばらしい光が射してきて、永遠の命に生きることができる。

“Let It Be”
Luke 1:26-38
Lord may you pour your grace and peace unto the people gathered in this sanctuary on this fourth Sunday of Advent! Amen.
I believe everyone knows “Let It Be,” a great Beatles song on their final studio album of the same name. But I am not sure how many of you know the close relationship between the Gospel I read and “Let It Be.”
Although many of their pieces were composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this piece was written by Paul. When Paul wrote this piece, it was during very difficult time in the lives of the Beatles. Shortly after the release of this album the band broke up. John, Paul, George, and Ringo went their separate ways.
We can easily relate to the lyrics of the song, as Paul sings, “When I find myself in times of trouble.”, Paul is not the only person to experience difficulty, each of us often find ourselves in times of trouble. Examples of difficult times can include, raising children, when caring for elderly parents, making business decisions, and making end-of-life plans etc. During these decisions we ponder the best course of action.
Let’s go back to 2000 years ago. Jesus’ Mother, Mary faced a troubling situation. Obviously, it was a much more serious situation than the one the Beatles faced.
Mary was engaged to a young carpenter named Joseph. During that time, the angel Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord be with you!” Mary was confused, anxious, and was unsure what the angel meant.
“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel continued, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High”
Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” The angel replied, “The baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.”
Mary must have been very worried because being an unwed mother is unacceptable according to Jewish law. Mary would not only face her engagement being broken off, but she also might face capital punishment, i.e. the death penalty.
However, she responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”
This portion of the Mary’s words was written in Greek “Genoit moi kata to thema sou.” Literally, “Let it be according to the word of you.” The word “Genoit” means “Let it be.” This word “let it be” does not mean “to irresponsibly leave it as it is.” She did not mean in a passive sense. Rather this pronoun “it” includes the meaning of “according to God’s will.”
Although Mary pondered this incident and could not do anything by herself, I think she meant that “May the Lord use me as an instrument of God and let it be according to your will.” This was her faithful and active prayer.
What can we learn today, in the Gospel of Luke, about the words that Mary prayed to God through the angel Gabriel? I think we see Mary’s wonderful and faithful prayer, her humble attitude and actions in her prayer “Let It Be.” Also, God is asking us to listen again to the great hit song “Let It Be” and to rethink our prayers, attitudes, and actions as Christians.
Let me reread you the first few lyrics “When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.” Incidentally, Paul McCartney’s mother was named Mary and she died when Paul was in high school. He might have meant Mother Mary in the lyrics as his mother, but I am almost sure that Paul had Jesus’ mother, Mary, in mind as well because after he wrote the piece, he asked the famous Gospel singer, Aretha Franklin to sing the song.
In our lives, we encounter troubles that we think we can do nothing about. But there is at least one thing I am sure we can do…we can pray. We can pray “Let it be according to your will.” Or we can pray as Jesus taught us, “Thy will be done.” By enthusiastically praying this prayer, God will guide our attitudes and actions. It is not because of our will, but due to His will that we may see the light and live eternally. Amen. Pr. Hitoshi Adachi
