マタイ2:1-12
主イエスから恵みと平安が集まりました会衆の上に豊かに注がれますように！
皆さん、新年の抱負、英語ではNew Year’s Resolution 、を考えられた方、多かったと思う。 今年はこんなことに注意して生活しよう、あるいは、こういう目標を立てた等々、みなさん、それぞれに、心に思うことがあったのではないかと想像する。
日本語ミニストリーとしても、教会の暦では、昨年11月30日から新しい年に入っていたため、11月ごろからの礼拝説教の中で、2015年に向けて、指針が与えられていったように思う。
11月と12月に礼拝説教でお話していたことを若干、復習する。 ルカ福音書とマルコ福音書から、「目を覚ましている」ということは、イエスの再臨を待ち望むことだが、いつ来られても良いように眠らないでいるということではなく、目の見えないながらもとても大切な聖霊なる、主イエスが招いてくださっている礼拝に感謝して出ること。そして主イエスを愛することと同じ位重要な、隣人を愛して歩む、信仰生活を実行することが、目をさまして、再臨を待ち望むということであるというメッセージが与えられていた。
そのような御言葉が礼拝説教で語られる中、2015年テーマ聖句として、コロサイの信徒への手紙4章2節から「目を覚まして、感謝を込め、ひたすら祈りなさい。」という御言葉が与えられた。
そして本日、2015年の最初の聖日礼拝、顕現主日。 顕現主日とは、キリスト教会がクリスマスを12月25日として祝い、その12日後の1月6日に、東方の国の占星術の学者たちに、赤ちゃんのイエスが顕われた、つまり顕現された日として、覚えてきている。 1月６日はだいたいは平日になってしまうので、６日に一番近い、聖日ということで、本日顕現主日として、この礼拝の時が与えられている。
与えられた福音書は、占星術の学者たちと、赤ちゃんイエスが対面するストーリ。 占星術の学者たちという言葉は、ギリシャ語ではMagoiという言葉が使われているが、マギ族の人々。Magiという言葉は、英語のMagicの語源ではないかと思うが、星占いをしたり、魔術を行なう人々だったようだ。
そして、このMagi族はおそらくイスラエルのはるか東方、現代のイラン北西部にいた人々、その昔はペルシャ大帝国の宗教上は、司祭階級の人々だったようだ。 つまりユダヤ教とは異なる宗教を信じていた、占星術者たちにも、「ユダヤ人の王が生まれた」ということが、星占いの結果、告げられた。
そして、占星術の学者たちはその王子を拝むため行動を起こす。 といってもユダヤのどこに生まれたかということまでは特定できなかった。そこで、ユダヤ人の王に会いに行く。 そしてまずは、ユダヤの中心都市である、エルサレムにやってきて、「ユダヤの王子が生まれたようですが、拝みに来ました。でも、どこに生まれたのでしょうか」と質問する。
この質問を聞いて、当時のユダヤの王、ヘロデは、自分の地位を脅かすものであり、不安に思う。 それで、自分の側近たちと相談して、旧約聖書のミカ書にある預言の言葉から、生まれたとしたら、ベツレヘムだろうという見解を出した。といってもベツレヘムのどこの家かということまでは特定できているわけではない。
そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちに、「その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう」と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出す。 しかし、ヘロデは内心、その生まれた子供の場所がわかったら、殺してしまおうと心の中では思っていた。
占星術の学者たちは、王の言葉を聞いて出かけると、不思議なことに、東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上に止まり、学者たちは喜びにあふれる。それは、例の馬小屋だったわけだが、中に入ると、みどり子イエスは母マリアと共におられた。
学者たちは、ひれ伏してイエスを拝み、持ってきた、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。そして、東方の国へ帰るわけだが、帰り道は、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな」とお告げがあったため、エルサレムへは寄らずに、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。
２０１５年のはじめに、イエスの顕現物語を、あらためて聞くとき、主なる神はわたしたちに、何を語りかけておられるのだろうか？ 大きなポイントは、占星術の学者たちは、ユダヤ人ではなく、異邦人であったことが挙げられると思う。
異邦人であるにもかかわらず、ユダヤの新しく生まれた王を拝みに行くという行動に導かれる。そして、救い主、イエスと対面する。そして、対面したあと、歩んできた道ではない、別の道を歩むように導かれている。
私たちも、「目を覚まして、感謝して、ひたすら祈る」という信仰生活を続けていく上で、今年は、神様からちょっと別の道を通って信仰生活を歩み続けるように、さらにいえば、別の方法で伝道をするように、導かれているのではないだろうか。
異邦人の一部である日本語を話す人々の中にも、また母国語かに関係なく、どのような異邦人であっても、まだまだ主の慈しみと恵みを必要としている人々がたくさんいる。 そのような方々への伝道を続ける上で、この復活ルーテル教会のJapanese Ministryも、喜んで、ちょっと別の道を歩み、主の御心に従うミニストリーとして導かれますように！ アーメン

“By Another Way”
Matthew 2:1-12
May Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ be showered upon the people gathered in this Resurrection sanctuary!
I imagine there are many of you who thought about new year’s resolutions the last couple days. Maybe things like: “To work out every day,” or “write in a diary every day,” etc…
The church calendar begins the new year from November 30th, the First Advent Sunday. I was reflecting over the message from that specific service over the last few days and realized that the new year’s resolution for the Japanese Ministry had already been defined back then.
A quick overview of the key points from the messages during November and December is the meaning of “Keep Awake” from Luke and Mark. By “Keeping Awake”, the scripture implies that followers shall wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ by coming to worship and walk the journey of faith in loving our neighbors.
Reflecting over these messages, one passage struck a chord with the ministry: “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.” This is an appropriate thematic verse for 2015.
Today is the first Sunday Service of 2015 and we are observing an Epiphany. An epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus to the Gentile. It has been celebrated in Christian history on January 6th, a week day almost every year, so we now observe it on the closest Sunday from January 6th.
And the Gospel given today is from Matthew chapter 2, “the story in which the wise men from east meet with the baby, Jesus.” When we look at the original Greek Bible, the word for the wise men is “Magoi” the plural form of “Magi.” Magi in Greek is the origin of “magician” in English. Therefore, people called Magoi were doing astronomy or magic.
Magoi were probably living far away from Israel, most likely a part of Iran now. They were not only doing magic or astronomy, but more importantly, they were priests. Therefore, they were not believers of Judaism, but practicing a different religion. They were obviously a group of gentiles and were notified of the news, through astronomy, that the King of Jews was born.
The wise men took actions to worship the King. However, they were unaware of where this King was. They went to Jerusalem and asked, “It seems like the King of Jews was born and we came to worship him, but where is he?”
King Herod felt that his position as current king was threatened by this question. He asked his advisors, teachers of the law and Pharisees, and found that the King was supposedly born in Bethlehem according to the prophet Micah. The specific house in Bethlehem was still unclear.
King Herod asked the wise men, “Please search for the child and when you find him, please let me know so that I may worship him as well,” and sent them off. Although Herod had stated his intentions to worship him, his real intent was to kill the child.
The wise men left Jerusalem. Mysteriously, the star guided them to the place where Jesus was born and they were filled with joy. When they entered the house, they saw the baby Jesus, Messiah.
After worshipping him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, they left for their own country on an alternate road because a dream had warned them not to return to Herod.
What is God telling us today through this story, and why is this the first story of 2015?
We are gentile, as those wise men were, and we are still worshipping the same Messiah, Jesus, born as the King of Jews for sure. One of the biggest points in the story is that the wise men were gentiles.
Even though they were gentiles, they were guided to take actions to worship Jesus, the Messiah. After they worshipped Jesus, they were guided to travel another road.
While we continue our journey in faith, “Devoting ourselves to pray to the Lord Jesus, keeping awake for the second coming of Jesus with thanksgiving,” I think we, as members of the Japanese Ministry, are guided to another road, still worshipping the same Messiah, Jesus.
There are so many Japanese speaking people who are Gentile and need the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. To reach out to them—to tell the good news of Jesus to them—may the Lord guide each one of us in Resurrection’s Japanese Ministry to go joyfully and to walk a different road to fulfill God’s will.
