マルコ 8:31-38
主の慈しみと平安がここにあつまった一人一人に注がれますように！
ある方が亡くなったために、その方が加入していた日本の生命保険の会社に、死亡を通知して、手続きをはじめてもらうように依頼したことがあった。
すると、保険会社の担当者は「ああ、Mr. Cはクリスチャンだったのに、癌で命を落とされたのね。」と言われた。保険会社の方は、キリスト教に興味を持っておられたようだが、クリスチャンになっていれば、癌にかかったりしない、あるいは癌にかかっても死ぬことは無い、そのようなことを信じている宗教ではないかと思っておられたようだった。
みなさんはどう思っておられるだろうか。 クリスチャンであれば、癌にならないという考えは？ 前に説教で話したことがあったと思うが、人生、上り坂あり、下り坂あり、さらにまさかという坂もある。クリスチャンであろうが、なかろうが、まさかもやってくる。
まさかには、いろいろある、がんでステージ４といわれるかもしれない。あるいは突然のストロークか心臓発作か、あるいは突然の交通事故かもしれない。 あるいは、アルツハイマーか、ＡＬＳかもしれない。 しかし、肝心なことは、どういう形のまさかが来るかわからないが、どう神と向き合うか、どう家族や友人たちと向き合えるかということではないだろうか？
今日与えられている福音書は、イエスが弟子たちに自分は十字架にかかって殺される。しかし、三日後には復活する話をはじめられたところ。 しかし、一番弟子のペテロは、そんなことがあってはなりませんと言って、イエスをいさめはじめる。
それに対してイエスは、ペテロを「サタンよ引き下がれ」といって叱責する。 サタンとは先週も話したように、人間を神の思いから逸脱させてようとする力。そしてそれにしたがって神の方から別の方向を向いてしまうことを罪と呼んでいる。ペテロは人間の思いとしては当然で、主と仰ぐイエスが十字架にかかって殺されるようなことがあってはならない、そんな「まさか」があってはならないと述べた。
しかし、神の御心はそうではなく、まっこうから、サタンだと否定されてしまった。 じゃ、神の思いはどういうことなのだろうか？ イエスは、ペテロを非難した後、とても大切なことを述べていると思う。
「自分の命を救いたいと思う者は、それを失うが、わたしのため、また福音のために命を失う者は、それを救うのである。 人は、たとえ全世界を手に入れても、自分の命を失ったら、何の得があろうか。自分の命を買い戻すのに、どんな代価を支払えようか。いったいどういうことなのか？」
命という言葉だけで４回、さらに、命をさしている「それ」という代名詞も２回あり、合計、６回の命という言葉があるともいえる。 この命という言葉は、ギリシャ語では、プシュケーという言葉が使われていて、「息」とか文字通り「命」でこの世の命をさしている場合と、「魂」と訳したらよいかと思うが永遠の命をさしている場合がある。
そのどちらの命のことをいっているかを吟味しながら、もう一度読み直したい。「自分の命を救いたい者」の「命」とはどっちか？ 「それを失う」の「それ」はどっちか。 「イエスのため、福音のために命を失う」の「命」はどっちか？ それを救うの「それ」はどっちか？
答えは、イエスの歩まれた生涯からわかってくる。 イエスのこの世の命は、ユダヤ教の指導者たちばかりではなく、民衆もこぞって、十字架にかけて、この世の命を終わりにしてしまった。 イエスはいっさいそれらに抵抗することなく、従順に十字架を担ぎ、無抵抗のまま、十字架上で死に、葬られた。そして、地獄のようなところにまで行かれた。しかし、イエスは復活し、永遠の命を得る方となった。
イエスは永遠の命に生きておられる方であり、私たちクリスチャンは、イエスの聖霊によって洗礼にあずかった生きるものとなった。それはすなわち、イエスと同じようにわたしたちは、洗礼で罪とともに死に、永遠の命にあずかっている。たとえ、この世の命が終わっても、永遠の命に生き続ける。
問題は、この世の命の終わるときに、どうわたしたちは対応したらよいのだろうか？ もちろん、どういう医療が受けられるのか、お葬式も心配、お墓も心配という気持ちもわかるが、もっともっと大切な永遠の命が重要ということをイエス様がおっしゃているのではないだろうか？
この世の命にしがみつくのではなく、たとえ、地獄と思えるようなところを通るかもしれない。ひどい話だが、イエスと同じように、クリスチャンであるがゆえに十字架にかけられて殺される人もたくさんいるのがキリスト教の歴史だ。現代でいえば、イスラム国の兵士たちのテロにあって、命を失うことだってありうる。 しかし、イエスの信仰によって、イエスとともに永遠の命に生きるようにと言われているのではないか。
１ヶ月前は、私は長崎にいた。長崎には、有名な26聖人記念館がある。26聖人のひとりひとりのことは、かなりの記録がのこっておいて名前はもちろん、いろいろなことが紹介されている。 その中の一人、パウロ三木という人は、十字架上で押しかけた群集に向かって、「私はキリスト教を信じたというだけで殺されるのである。この理由のゆえに私は命をささげることをいとわない。私はキリストの教えに従い、自分の処刑を命じた人（豊臣秀吉）と処刑にかかわったすべての人を許したい」と叫んだという。
私は、パウロ三木氏は、たしかにこの世の命は失ったが、永遠の命の中で、イエスととも、今も生きている。 キリストを信じてここで礼拝する私たちも、永遠に命に生き続けていることを覚えて、新しい一週間を新たに歩んでまいりたい。 アーメン

Those Who Lose Their Lives for the Gospel
Mark 8:31-38
May the Lord’s Grace and Peace be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary!
My friend passed away about 15 years ago. On behalf of his family, I contacted his life insurance company and asked the claims department for guidance because I was the family’s contact person.
The representative said, “Oh I am sorry, even though Mr. C was a Christian, he died due to cancer.” Although the representative showed interest in Christianity, she thought that believing in Christ might prevent you from getting cancer or even if you have cancer, you’ll be Ok and not die due to cancer.
What do you think about the relationship between being a Christian and the possibility of dying due to cancer or any other diseases? I’ve explained in the past, that even if we are Christians, we go through the ups and downs of life, including very difficult times; during which you may miserably suffer.
There are many different types of life challenges. You might be diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, you might suffer a sudden stroke or a heart attack, or you might be involved in a traffic accident. Also, you or a loved one might be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or ALS. When you are forced to deal with these life-changing situations, the issue becomes how do you deal with it – do you accept God’s will or do you act contrary to His will?
In the Gospel text read today, Jesus taught his disciples that he would suffer and be killed by Jewish leaders. However, he also taught that he would be resurrected. Even after listening to Jesus’ teachings, Peter rebuked him.
Jesus responds, to his rebuking disciple by saying, “Get behind me, Peter, Satan!” Satan means, as mentioned earlier, a force causing you to turn away from God’s will, which we call sin. Peter thought, not wrongly, that Jesus shouldn’t have to suffer and be killed. Peter was only human and concerned for his beloved teacher’s safety.
However, what Peter thought was not God’s will. So what was God’s will? I think Jesus said very important things to Peter after rebuking him.
“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the Gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?” What do Jesus’ words mean, to Peter? What do Jesus’ words mean to us?
Here, the word “life” appears four times. Also there are two instances of the pronoun, “it” meaning “life.” As such, the word “life” appears six times. In the Greek Bible, life is the word “pshuke” which has a double meaning. One meaning is “breath and life” which indicates earthly life that is finite. The other meaning is “soul” meaning eternal life; something infinite.
By contemplating which of the two meanings is expressed in each instance of the word “life”, I believe the Gospel will have a deeper impact on your faith journey.
Let me reread this sentence, the words of the Gospel that Jesus taught to his disciples 2000 years ago and teaches to us now. “For those who want to save their life will lose it…” For the first “life”, does he mean earthly life or eternal life? How about “it”, does he mean earthly life or eternal life? “And those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.” In the phrase “lose their life,” does he mean earthly or eternal life? How about in the phrase “save it,” does he mean earthly or eternal life?
The answers to these questions may be understood through the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus was crucified not only by Jewish leaders but also by the crowd gathered as witnesses. All agreed to crucify him through their actions or silence. Their choice ended Jesus’ earthly life. Jesus did not fight against the Jewish leaders or against crowd. He just obeyed. He carried the cross, walked to Golgotha, and was crucified. He died and was buried. He even went to the pit. However, he was resurrected after three days. 40 days after the resurrection, he ascended to heaven and is surely living eternal life.
The real issue in our lives is how we face the end of our earthly life. How should we deal with our death? Or how may we better prepare for it?
From Jesus’ words taught to his disciples 2000 years ago and taught to us today, we learn that we should faithfully live for Jesus’ sake, for the sake of the Good News. We are guided to live an infinite eternal life rather than only a finite earthly life. We may encounter devastating hardships, but even in the heavy darkness, like descending to the pit…because of our faith in Christ who also suffered miserably and was crucified, died on the cross on Friday, but then victoriously resurrected on Sunday; we may also live eternal life with Jesus. Sadly, there were many times Christians were killed in the past and they’re still being even now. However even those killed recently are promised eternal life, through faith in Jesus.
One month ago, I visited Nagasaki. There is a famous museum there called the “26 Martyrs Museum.” Each martyr’s name is known and their activities are well recorded. One of them was named Paul Miki. He shouted before he was crucified, saying that “I am going to be killed only because I believed Jesus as our Lord. I won’t miss this earthly life. According to Jesus’ teaching, I forgive Hideyoshi Toyotomi who ordered my death and also forgive the people who are carrying out my crucifixion.
Paul Miki lost his earthly life, but he still lives the eternal life with Jesus. During this Lenten season, let us try not to focus exclusively on our finite troubles and remember the promise of an infinitely better eternal life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
