What is the Spirit of Truth?
John 15:26-27, 16:4-15

May the Gracious Love of our Lord be poured into the people in this sanctuary!

How was your Easter season? Do many of you, that attended Easter Sunday worship and luncheon, still remember what the sanctuary looked like? And how have you been since then?
7 weeks have passed since Easter and today we are celebrating Pentecost. How do you feel today, when reflecting upon the last 7 weeks?
Each situation is different. Some might be very thankful for their good health and financial stability, and feel that it was a good Easter season. But I am sure there are people who became sick, had accidents, were injured, or are facing financial difficulties. If you’re included in the later group, your Easter didn’t go as well as hoped.
In Japan, there is a book called “Kami mo Hotoke mo Nai” which means there is no God and no Buddha. Even though I am a pastor, I understand that we, as human beings, sometimes want to say these words.

On this Pentecost Sunday, we read Acts Chapter 2. The scene in which the Holy Spirit came down like doves came down as tongues of fire, and came down as strong wind. However, let’s reflect upon how the disciples were feeling before Pentecost. Right before Easter, they could not prevent Jesus’ crucifixion and they were in tremendous shock due to Jesus Christ’s death.
Then Jesus appeared among his disciples, forgave them, and breathed the Holy Spirit upon them on the first day of Easter saying “Peace be with you.” Jesus appeared to his disciples for 40 days, but in the end, he ascended into heaven.
I believe the disciples again wondered about their lives, even though Jesus said “You will have power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses of Jesus who is God, the savior, to the ends of the earth.”
10 days later, his disciples received the power and began miraculously communicating with people from different countries. The Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to speak different languages and spread the Word. However, looking back on the lives of first generation disciples, their lives were not easy and many of them were persecuted. Even though they would be persecuted like Jesus was, they joyfully conveyed the word of Jesus Christ and testified that Jesus of Nazareth was our Savior and Lord. What is the Holy Spirit? Why does the Holy Spirit work the way that it does?

In order to think about how deeply the Holy Spirit works for the disciples and us, we need to remember about what Jesus told his disciples even before the night he was betrayed and his crucifixion. On Maundy Thursday, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be sent to his disciples.
A short time ago, I read the Gospel of John, Jesus clearly mentioned his promise that the Holy Spirit would be sent to his disciples. Jesus said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” It is important to notice that in this instance Jesus uses the phrase “the Spirit of truth.”
What is “the Spirit of truth”? The Spirit is movement of air, wind, and the breath of God. How about “truth”?
In Hebrew, this word is expressed as “emt.” The root word of this word is the same as “amen,” which means “surely it is right and trusted.” Therefore, we can interpret that the Spirit of truth is God’s breath that we can truly trust.

Also, I just would like to mention that Jesus was saying “I am the way, the truth, and the life” which is often read during memorial services, but the point is Jesus himself is truth. So when Jesus said in today’s text, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth,” The disciples weret old to truly trust the words of the Father, God, and that they would guide them to Jesus, the truth.
Even today, the Father God is sending the His breath/word that we can truly trust, that is the Spirit of truth. That Spirit is guiding us to be true Christians, like Jesus, who humbled himself, emptied himself, and offered himself completely to the Father, God.
When you reflect upon the last 7 weeks, some of you had very challenging experiences, like Ryoko Higuchi and her family. Even through these situations, the Holy Spirit works beside us and guides us to the one, the truth. Whatever our situations are, the Spirit, God’s breath that we can truly trust is with us. The Spirit fills us with Joy and Hope.

From today, almost 25 weeks, almost half of the year, will be post-Pentecost season. Although you might fear or wonder what your life will be like for the next 6 months, believing in the Holy Spirit is enough to give a sense of calm. I pray that the Spirit of truth guides us according to God’s will. The Spirit of truth speaks Jesus’ words, so we have no reason to doubt what God wants for us. Amen.
