ヨハネ3:1-17
三位一体なる主の恵みと平安が人々の心に豊かに浸み込むように！
今日は、スクリーンに現われた絵を見て欲しい。 何に見えるだろうか？ 「あひる」に見える方？ うさぎに見える方？
このような絵を見た経験はあると思う。 見方によってはあひるだし、見方よってはうさぎ。 これは、あひるの頭が５０％描かれているのではなく、うさぎの頭が５０％描かれているわけではない。 あえていうなら、あひるの頭が１００％描かれているし、うさぎの頭が１００％描かれている。
三位一体主日に与えられた福音書の最後には、ヨハネ3:16、:「神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」という有名な箇所が出てくる。
よく車のステッカーに、「John3:16」と貼ってあるのを見ることもある。 ヨハネ３：１６だけを読んでも、聖書の結論ともいえる、「主われを愛す」がよく現われている。しかし、なぜこの言葉が三位一体主日に読まれているのだろうか。
この言葉がイエスが語られた背景をもうすこし注意深く読むことによって、イエスキリストがどういう方であるかがわかってくるように思う。
ヨハネ３章は、「イエスが神のもとから来た”教師”である」ことはわかるというファリサイ人の議員ニコデモが、イエスの元にきて、イエスと会話をしている。 イエスは「はっきりいっておく」という重要なことを語るぞ、という前置きのあと、「人はあらたに生まれなければ、神の国を見ることはできない」と話す。
そこで、ニコデモは「この世に一度生まれたものが、母親の胎内に入ってあらたに生まれるなんていうことができるのか？」と質問し、イエスの話す意味はわからずにいる。 そこで、イエスは、二回目の、「はっきりいっておく」という言葉を述べたあと、「だれでも水と霊をもって、新たに生まれなければ、神の国に入ることはできない。」と語る。
それでも「どうしてそんなことがありえるのか」と質問するニコデモに、3回目の「はっきりいっておく」という言葉を述べて、神がこの世のすべての人々を愛しており、神から送られた自分自身が十字架にかかり、捧げ物となることを示唆する。 そして、この自分が神から送られた超本人であり、十字架にかかる自分を信じる世界中の人々が、一人も滅びることなく永遠の命を得られるように、している。
現代、イエスは神なる救い主としてみるより、イエスは人間の一人にしか過ぎないと見る人々が増えている。 とくに現代は、イエスは「神が送った預言者の一人に過ぎない」、あるいは、「教師」に過ぎないというイスラム教勢力が圧倒的に伸びている現実がある。 イエスは過去の教師では終わっておらず、また過去に生きたただの預言者ではないのだが。。。
数十年後には、イスラム教徒はキリスト教徒を上回るともいわれる。 このような状況の中で、今日あたえられているヨハネ３章のイエスの言葉は、現代の世界中のキリスト教徒にも、また世界中の「イエスは預言者」あるいはただの人間の教師だったとする人々に、「もう一度、真剣にイエスのことを見るように」と言われているようだ。
現代を生きる、キリスト教徒にもイスラム教徒々に対しても、イエスをどう見るかによって人生が大きく変わりますよ、といわれているように感じる。 神の一人子が、十字架にかかって葬られたが、復活した、そして聖霊としてこの世に存在されている。そのイエスをもう一度、見上げるようにと言われているように思える。
私自身の反省もあるが、今までの三位一体主日に「三位一体」は、むずかしいから、説教では、三位一体の話を置き去りにしてしまう傾向があったことはいなめない。 だからこそ、今日の箇所から三位一体について、話すように聖霊が働き、今日の礼拝で私たちは三位一体なるお方に少しでも近づくように導かれている。
一昨年の修養会で私は、神を太陽に例える話をした。とくに打ち合わせをしたわけではなかったが、昨年の修養会でキム先生も、話されたことで、少々復習したい。 三位一体を簡単に話すなら、父なる神は、地球から遠くに存在している太陽みたいなもの。
地球から遠いといっても、しっかりと、光となって、太陽光は地球に届いている。 その太陽光がイエスキリスト。 神から放たれて地球に生まれたイエス様である。 そして、その光はこの地球上を覆っていて、熱となって、暖かくしてくださっている。 その熱こそ聖なる霊。聖なる霊が地球を覆うという状況は、イザヤの預言で、聖なる万軍の主、主の栄光がこの地を覆うという状況とも似ている。
太陽、光、熱はわたしたちがまさに見ることもでき感じることもできるもの。 そこに、父、子、聖霊なる三位一体なる主を見出すことができるのではないだろうか。
太陽は太陽ひとつで１００％の太陽。 しかし、太陽から光となって１００パーセントの光にもなるし、それが熱として存在するとき、１００％熱だ。 ３３％が太陽で、光が３３パーセントで、３３％が熱ではない。同じように、イエス様は１００％神であり、１００％人間であり、１００％聖霊で、300パーセントなる御方ともいえるのではないだろうか。このような三位一体なるお方について、私たちは世の人々とシェアするように導かれているのではないだろうか。よ人類がイエスをどう見るかによって、私たちの世界は大きく変わるのだと思う。アーメン

“Your Life Depends on How You Look at Things”
John 3:1-17
May the Lord, Holy Trinity, pour the grace and peace into hearts of the people in this world!
Please look at the screen. What is pictured? Do you see a rabbit’s head or do you see a duck’s head?
Many of you are probably familiar with this type of image. You can see the duck’s head and the rabbit’s head at the same time. This drawing is not 50% a duck’s head and not 50% a rabbit’s head. Both heads are perceived 100% respectively.
The Gospel text today includes John 3:16. It reads, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” This is one of most famous verses in the Bible.
Many of you have seen “John 3:16” stickers on cars. The reason the verse is so popular is that a central tenet of the Bible is expressed in it: God so loves the world. God loves each one of us. However, why was this text chosen for the Holy Trinity text?
I believe that understanding the contextual background of John 3:16’s text leads us to a better understanding of who Jesus is. In other words, reading the verses before 3:16 helps us better understand Jesus’ character.
Chapter 3 begins with the description of Nicodemus, a Pharisee politician in Israel. He said to Jesus, “We know that you are a teacher from God.” but when people say “I know” or “we know” it probably means that people don’t “truly know.” So Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you.” Then, he said, “no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.”
Then Nicodemus replied, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Surely, no one can enter their mother’s womb a second time to be born?” He took what Jesus said literally. Then Jesus replied a second time, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Nicodemus still didn’t fully understand Jesus’ and said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, saying “Very truly,” three times, and he explained that he is the one who came down from heaven and indicated that he will be crucified on the cross. Then, He proclaimed, “that God so loved the world that he gave his only son. So that whoever believes in him may not perish.”
When we think about people in the 21st century, the number of people who disbelieve that Jesus is God tends to exceed the number of people who believe Jesus is indeed God. Some sociologists forecast that the number of Muslims who believe that Jesus is a prophet, as the Jews believe, will exceed the number of Christians within several decades.
In this modern age, when we listen to the Gospel text read today, it seems that our Lord is not only guiding us Christians to see Jesus well. He also wants people who see Jesus only as a teacher and deny the Holy Trinity and deny him as their Savior and Lord to truly see Jesus. God loves even those who deny him. The text is guiding us to contemplate who Jesus truly is.
I think we are being guided to see Jesus as someone who was crucified, died, was resurrected, ascended, and is still among us as the Holy Spirit.
I am lamenting my past Sunday sermons that focused on the Holy Trinity. I often avoided the topic of the Holy Trinity since it can theologically difficult to understand. Therefore, I think today the Holy Spirit is guiding me to talk about who Jesus is as the Holy Trinity.
A year before last, during the Japanese Ministry retreat, I talked about the image of God as the Sun, and then last year, Pastor Kim also talked about the same metaphor. Those of you that attended the retreat should remember the discussion. It will be redundant for you, but please bear with me, the Sun exists very far away from the Earth.
Even though it is located far from the Earth, the energy of Sun comes to Earth as light. That light is Jesus. From God, Jesus comes to Earth. The Earth is surrounded by light…that light warms the entire world. The light warms our hearts and lives. The life-giving light is also the Holy Spirit.
We can see and feel the Sun, sunlight, and its radiant heat. From these three aspects, we metaphorically sense the existence of the Holy Trinity. We perceive the Sun as 100% the Sun, its light as 100% light, and its radiant heat as 100% heat.
Each aspect is fully perceived and not just seen as one-third of a whole. Likewise, Jesus is 100% God, 100% human, and 100% the Holy Spirit. He is indeed the Triune God.
