主イエスの恵みと平安が集まった会衆の心の中に染み渡るように！
もう50年ほど前の話になってしまうが、悪いニュースは一切報道せずに、良いニュースだけを報道するラジオステーションが開局したそうだ。 一見、すばらしいことのようだが、ビジネスとしては数週間と続かなかったという。 スポンサーがつかなかったのだと思う。 そして、実際問題、人間は悪いニュースを欲している実情があるのだと思う。
本日与えられた福音書、イエスの幼なじみだったヨハネが、当時のヘロデ王の下、牢屋につながれていた。 ヘロデ王は、ヨハネを尊敬していた面があったが、妻のヘロディアは、殺したいと思っていた。さきほど、聞かれた通り、信じられないような経緯を経て、ヨハネは殺され、ヨハネの頭が盆に載せられてヘロディアの娘に渡される。 さらに、娘はヘロディアに渡す様子が描写されていた。
なんでこんな極悪非道ともいうべき話が、聖書の中の話なのだろうか？ なぜ、イエスのおさななじみのヨハネがこんな無残な最後を遂げなければならなかったのだろうか？ 私たちが、納得の行く説明をすることは難しいのかと思う。 ただ、現実問題として、私たち人間の心は矛盾に満ちている。 冒頭に話した、悪いニュースを欲している面がある。
目を覆いたくなるようなことでも、実は、指の隙間から、その悲惨な状況を見たくなるような面がある。 みなさんの記憶にも、まだ残っているかと思うが、なぜ911の飛行機がワールドトレードセンターに激突するシーンがあれほどまでに繰り返し、放映されなければならなかったのか？ そこには、矛盾に満ちた人間の心、罪が、隠れているように思う。
ヘロデ一家が、ヨハネを悲惨な死に追いやっただけではなく、ユダヤ人も異邦人も凶暴してイエスを十字架刑にかけて殺してしまったのは事実で、その話を2000年間くりかえし、私たちは語り続けてきた事実がある。そして、これからもイエスの十字架は、語られ続けるであろう？ なぜだろう？ そこには、神の秘められた計画がある。 そして、そのイエスの死が、死では終わらなかった、死によって死は滅ぼされた事実がある。復活の力があり、復活の命により、どれだけ、人類は、慰められ、癒されているか計り知れないものがあるのだと思う。
現代においても、残念ながら、悲惨な報道、さらに映像を目撃することは続いてしまう。 それを何度も見るか見ないかが問題ではなく、できれば、見ないほうが良いのかと思うが、もっとも大切なことは、そこに秘められた神の思いを、私たちは思いめぐらすことが大切なのかと思う。
どんな困難、どんな悲惨な死と思われるようなことがおこったとしても、その真っ只中におられる主イエス、いっしょに困難を経験してくださり、慈しみと恵みに満ちた主イエスの働き、勝利を確認できますように！

“His Mysterious Plan”
Mark 6:14-29

About 50 years ago, there was a radio station that never broadcasted bad news but only broadcasted good news. Although it seems like a good idea, businesswise, it did not last more than a few weeks. No major sponsors supported them. It seems, human beings want bad, breaking news.
In Today’s gospel, John the Baptist, who was Jesus’ childhood friend and second cousin, was in jail. Although King Herod respected John, his wife Herodias did not like him and she wanted to kill him. Herod was conflicted. He respected John but swore oaths to Herodias’ daughter that she could have anything she wished. As I read the Gospel text a short time ago, John was beheaded in an unbelievably cruel way. After the beheading, his head on a tray was given to Herodias’ daughter and she, then, gave it to her mother.
This scene is like something from a bloody horror movie. Why was this shocking story included in the Bible? Why was Jesus’ childhood friend, John, killed in such a cruel way and treated horribly after death? I do not think I can convincingly answer these questions. However, as this story shows, human beings’ hearts are full of conflicts.
As I said earlier, human beings seem to prefer bad news. Even when people should avert their eyes, they still look at horrible events. I believe many of you remember that tragic event when the two planes crashed into the World Trade Center (in New York) on September 11th, 2001; 15 years ago. The media broadcasted that video again and again. Why did such a horrible event need to be seen repeatedly? When discussing this national tragedy, people’s hidden conflicts are revealed. Our hearts went out to the victims’ families, but news outlets also knew that some people like seeing large-scale tragedies.
As a historical fact, not only did Herod’s family horribly kill John, but both Jews and Gentiles crucified Jesus Christ and he was buried in the tomb. That story has been told again and again for 2000 years. And I believe people will continue to tell Jesus’ story well into the future. Why? Because within that story, God’s mysterious plan is revealed. Jesus’ death on the cross did not end with his death. God defeated death and Jesus was resurrected and he is living and central to our lives. Because of his resurrection, we cannot measure how many people are comforted and have realized God’s love and salvation.
In modern societies, or I should say in our post-modern societies, I believe people continue wanting to see breaking news that often includes tragic events. I think the point is not how often you see these events, even though I recommend people should not see them too often, but the most important thing is how you see and think God is working in the midst of these tragedies. How do you see God’s mysterious work in our society?
Even if we face terrible, challenging, or sad realities, we are walking with the Lord, Jesus Christ. He is full of grace and mercy, and he overcomes and ultimately wins in the midst horrible situations. The Lord is ever triumphant. Amen.
