ヨハネ 6:30-35
主イエスキリストの恵みと平安が、ここに集まった会衆の上に、豊かに注がれますように！ アーメン。
今年のヴァケーション・バイブル・スクール(VBS)のテーマは、”GO FISH”、「魚とりに行こう」だ。 その初日、明日の月曜日はマタイ4章から、次のようなことを学ぶ。 イエスの弟子たちは、ガリラヤ湖で魚をとる漁師たちだった。 その漁師たちに向かって、イエスは、イエスの弟子になるにあたり、「あなたたちを人をとる漁師にしよう」と話されたことを学ぶ。
なぜそんなことを言われたのだろうか？ そもそもとられた魚は、食べられてしまうわけだ。 だから、じゃ、人をとるとは、とった人を食べるということなのだろうか？ おもしろいことに、VBSの三日目は旧約聖書のヨナの物語で、ヨナが魚に食べられてしまう話を学ぶ。
しかし、もちろん、イエスが人間をとる漁師にしようといわれたのは、とらわれた人間が魚や弟子に、ましてやイエスに食べられてしまうわけでもない。
教会の言葉で言うならば、洗礼を受け、信仰を告白し、キリスト教の信者になること。簡単に言えば、キリストを信じること。 それにしても、キリストを信じるとはいったいどういうことなのだろうか。 今日の聖書の箇所は、私たちに、キリスト信者の根本にせまっているところともいえる。
イエスは5000人の人々を、5個のパンと2匹の魚だけで、満腹にした。この奇跡やイエスが行なった他の奇跡によって、人々には、いろいろな思惑が生じた。 このような奇跡を行えるイエスに、病気を癒す専門家になってもらいたいと思った人もいただろうし、イスラエルという国家がローマに支配されることがないように、イスラエルの自治を確立してもらいたいと思う人もいただろう。 いっさい食べ物に困ることがないように、永遠に食物を提供してくれる人になってもらいたいという人もいた。
しかし、なぜ、神の子イエスは、人の子として人々の間に現われたのだろうか？ イエスは確かに、病を癒したり、食べ物を与えたり、人々に奇跡的な業を見せられた。 しかし、その奇跡を人々が見て、人々の思惑通りにイエスを利用してしまうわけにはいかなかった。 もっともっと大きな目的が神にはあったからだ。
イエスの御業を人々が見ることで、イエスを知り、そして神を知るようになるということが、とても大切な目的だった。 神を知るというのは、知識として、神はこういう方であると理解する事とは大きく異なる事などだと思う。 私たちの思いでは理解しようがないような、神の力に頼る、イエスキリストを信じるということなのだろう。
イエスはもちろん、肉体的にも5000人の集まった民を満腹にしてあげたいと思った。 しかし、神の究極的な目的は、民が霊的に満たされることだった。 イエス自身が「わたしが天から降ってきた、命のパンである。」と言われたのは、イエス自身がすべての源ということ。また「そのパンをいただくものは、もう飢えも渇きもなくなる。」ともいわれた。霊的に満たされることは、イエスキリストだけによって可能なこと。
イエスはたとえ十字架刑にかかって、肉体的には心臓がとまることがあったとしても、神はイエスを復活させ、死をほろぼした。 そして聖霊として、ずっとこの世に生きるものとしてくださった。イエスを信じるものにとって、つまりイエスの体、命のパンをいただく者にとって、イエスの死と復活は、ただの奇跡だったとか、他人後事ではない。その命のパンといただく者は、イエスが復活し永遠の命に生きているように、私たちも、復活の命、永遠の命に生きている。
このメッセージのはじめに、漁師たちにとらわれた人々が、いったいどうなってしまうか。魚と同じように食べられてしまうのか？ という話をした。その答えは、とらえられた人々は、食べられるのではなく、逆にイエスを食べる人になる。パウロは第一コリントの中で、「私たちが裂くパンは、キリストの体にあずかることではないか。パンは一つだから、わたしたちは大勢でも一つの体です。皆が一つのパンを分けて食べるからです。」と書いている。
そして、それから2000年経って、洗礼を受け、かつ信仰を告白する者となった私たちも、毎週イエスを食べる人々の仲間入りをしている。 そして、イエスの体、教会の一部をなし、永遠の命に生きている。
今日、新たに、キリスト者であることの深い意味を考えながら、感謝をもってイエスを皆でいただこう。これまでの自分自身の勝手な考えや、後悔、すべての罪から解放されて、永遠に生きるイエスの体の一部となって、神の思いを実現しよう。イエスにとらえられたことを喜び、そして、新たに、人々をとる漁師となろう。 アーメン 安達均
What Will Happen to Those Fished By the Disciples?
John 6:30-35
May the Grace and Peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in this sanctuary! Amen
As you know by now, the theme of this year’s Vacation Bible School is “Go Fish.” The first day, Monday tomorrow, kids will learn from Matthew Chapter 4: The first disciples were fishermen, but Jesus called them, saying “I will make you fish for people.”
Why did Jesus say such a thing? Fish caught by fishermen are usually eaten by people. So what is going to happen to people caught by the disciples? Are they also going to be eaten? Interestingly, the third day of VBS, on Wednesday, children will learn the story of Jonah, in which Jonah was eaten by a big fish.
Of course, the purpose of the disciples fishing for people is not for the people to be eaten by actual fish, disciples, or Jesus. So what will happen to those caught by the disciples?
Ecclesiastically, the correct answer is to be baptized and to confess their faith in Christ. Or more simply stated, to believe in Christ…however, what does it really mean to believe in Christ? I think that the Gospel text today is fundamental when thinking about this question: What does becoming a Christian truly mean?
Several paragraphs before today’s text, 5000 people were well fed by Jesus with only five loaves of bread and two fish. Not only because of this miraculous action, but because of other miracles performed by Jesus, many people had certain expectations of him. For example, some thought that Jesus was the perfect doctor who always healed the sick. Some wanted him to be the political leader of Israel and some others undoubtedly wanted him to be a miraculous, eternal food provider.
What is the real purpose for Jesus to be present in the human world? Jesus physically revealed himself among humans and indeed performed miracles, such as healing the sick, feeding the five thousand, as we learned from the Bible. However, human beings could not utilize Jesus to solely satisfy their own personal agendas. There was a larger purpose/vision Jesus wanted to share with the world.
By seeing Jesus’ miraculous actions, I am sure that God wanted people to know his son, and not just have intellectual knowledge of Jesus but have faith-based awareness of Him. We, human beings, have been expected to trust and rely on God’s power that we cannot fully comprehend intellectually. We are expected to
believe in Christ as being 100% in our lives, rather than Jesus being there out of convenience to satisfy our personal agendas.
Of course Jesus wanted to physically feed the hungry 5000, but God’s ultimate goal was to ensure they were spiritually fed. As Jesus told in the Scriptures, “I am the bread of life that came down from heaven.” The bread of life is the source of everything. He said also “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” That spiritual satisfaction comes only from our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Jesus, the bread of life, is the Lord, he who was crucified and died. He whose physical heartbeat stopped and, despite this, he defeated death. Jesus’ Holy Spirit may live eternally among us. And for us, who believe in Jesus, the resurrection story is not just a miracle but we too can live eternally by eating his bread and drinking his blood.
In the beginning of this message I asked the question, what will happen to those caught by the disciples? Would they be eaten like fish? Not at all, the answer is the opposite. Those caught will consume Jesus’ body and blood. St. Paul writes in the 1st Corinthians Chapter 10, “The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”
And we, too, who were baptized and confirmed our faith in Christ, are consuming Jesus Christ every week. By consuming Jesus’ body and blood, each one of us becomes a part of Jesus and lives the eternal, resurrected life with Him.
Today, why don’t we consume Jesus again with our thankfulness, while contemplating the deeper meaning of being Christians. Our own selfish agendas, our regrets, and all our sins are cleansed and forgiven. Let’s live out God’s will as a part of the Body of the living Jesus. Let’s become an instrument of our Lord, Jesus Christ. May we rejoice that we were fished by Him, and let’s go fish for people in the world. Amen. Pr. H. Adachi
