主の恵みが集まった会衆に豊かに注がれますように！
キリスト教で、予定説という言葉があるが、聞かれたことがあるだろうか？ 一例は、「ある人がクリスチャンになるかならないかは、あらかじめ神様が決めていることですよ」ということ。
勘違いしないで欲しいのは、この予定説という考え方は、一部のプロテスタントの考え方で、カトリックや東方正教会では、そんな考えは同意していない。 ルーテル教会もプロテスタントではあるが、予定説という考えはしておらず、そんな話はしない。といいながら、今日、予定説という言葉は使って話ている。
というのは、今日の福音書には、イエスが「父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとへ来ることはできない。」と話された言葉が出てきたが、これは予定説のことをいっているのではないだろうか、と考える方もいると思うから。もう少し違った言い方をすれば、イエスは、ある人がイエスのもとに来るかどうか（信者になるかならないか）は神があらかじめ決めておられるということをイエスはおっしゃりたいと思う方もいるだろうから。
私は、そのような考え方は、しない方が良いと思っている。というより、この44節の言葉には、もっと他のすばらしいことが含まれていると思っている。信者になるかならないかは、イエスの父なる神があらかじめ計画されていたことなのだ。と言ってしまうと、それは、神はある特定の人々のみを導いているという話になってしまわかないだろうか？ また、それは人間の先入観とか偏見すらも、あたかも神の考えであるかのごとく語ってしまう可能性すらもあるように思う。
では、イエスが言われた「父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできない。」という言葉は、どういう意味を含んでいるのか、さらに思いを巡らせたい。ここで、今年の修養会でジョンウェスレーの話を今一度振り返ってみたい。
メソジスト運動をはじめたジョンウェスレーは、イギリスのアングリカン教会から、アメリカにいる原住民への伝道を志して、アメリカに渡った時は、そもそも戒律主義者だった。 聖書にある律法を守れば、人間は正しいとされると思っていた。メソジスト派という名前の通り、Methodology つまり、きちんきちんと規律を守っていれば、人間は救われるという考え方で伝道しようとしていたのだろう。しかし、アメリカに伝道に来たものの、全然うまく行かなかった。
ウェスレーは、失意のうちにイギリスに戻る。ロンドンのアルダーズゲートという場所で、モロビア派のピーターベーラー宣教師が、当時からすれば、さらに200年前に著されたマルチンルータのローマ3章の説教集について語っていた。ウェスレーに雷が落ちたかのごとくの回心が起こる。 ローマ3章のポイントは、人間はそもそも罪人である。正しい者とされるために、律法を努力して守って義とされるわけではない。
そのような人間を憐れみ、神はイエスキリストを立てて、十字架の死に到るまで父なる神へ従順な信仰を貫かれたイエスをいけにえとされた。その真理なるイエスを信じる者が、正しいとされることを神は示された。言い換えれば、イエスの信者になるということは、完全に神の恵み、神の贈り物であって、人間の努力によるものではない。 人間が努力するかどうかではなく、人間が、その神からの恵みを受け取るかどうかが問題。
神の贈り物ということについて、250年前のベーラー宣教師の言葉ではなく、もうちょっと現代的な贈り物の比喩を使って話してみたい。バレンタインチョコレートは、箱に入っていて、きらびやかな包装紙につつまれ、さらにリボンがかけてあったりする。そこで、そのチョコを食べるには、リボンをはずし、包装紙をとって、箱をあけ、やっとチョコレートにありつける。 神からのプレゼントである、恵みとはそのようなバレンタインチョコとは異なっていて、箱にも入っておらず、包装紙もなければ、リボンもない、私たちのまわりに、神からの恵みが、そのまま満ち溢れている。その恵みは、すべての人間が享受するには、リボンも解く必要もなければ、包装紙をはがす必要もなく、箱をあけなくてもよい、なんら人間が努力する必要はない、勉強をする必要もなく、その恵みにありつける。人間は、実は、神からのプレゼントである恵み、イエスキリストをふんだんに享受してしまっている。 キリストを信じるものになるかどうかは、その恵みを、イエスキリストと信じて、受け取るかどうかになってくる。
ウェスレーは、ローマ3章の説教を聞き、神の恵みに気づいて回心した際に、心がジーンと温まってくるものを感じたそうだ。 そして、それから後のメソジスト派は、驚くばかりの発展をして、アメリカにとどまらず、世界中に広まっていく。
さて、しつこいようだが、最後にもう一回質問したい、「父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできない。」という言葉は、イエスは現代の私たちに、なにを教えようとされているのだろうか。自分で戒律を守ったりするという努力とか、人間の力によっては、だれもイエスの元へ行くことはできない、つまり人間の力によって信者になるというわけではない。 しかし、父なる神が引き寄せてくださる、一方的な神の恵み、全人類にくださった十字架のイエスキリストを受け取るかどうかが、私たちが信仰者となり、神から義とされるということを教えてくださっていると思う。
人間の力、あるいは聖書を学んで御言葉を暗記したりする人間の努力によって、信仰に到達するのではなく、信仰は神からの贈り物、「私は命のパンである」といわれた、すべての源、イエスを受け取ることから信仰が新しく始まるのだと思う。そして、イエスの御言葉と聖体をいただきつづけ、常に新たにされ続けることが、信仰の継続ともいえる。 今日、新たに、イエスの御言葉を聞いた。そして、これからイエスキリストの体と血である聖体をいただくが、ぜひその深い意味を覚えながら、いただこう。そして、新たな聖霊の力、喜びをもって、世に遣わされ、そのイエスの恵みを分かちあうものとされよう。 アーメン
Becoming A Christian According to God’s Grace
John 6:35 41-51
May the Lord pour his grace and mercy upon the people here in this sanctuary!
Have you ever heard the word, “Predestination” in a church? For example, whether or not a person will have Christian faith is pre-planned by God.
Please do not misunderstand: “Predestination” is not a concept or doctrine that all Christian Denominations agree with. Catholic and Orthodox Churches do not agree with this concept. As for Lutherans, we do not talk about this…however, I am talking about it a little bit this morning:
Because, people might think that the words Jesus said in the Gospel today, “No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me” are somewhat related to Predestination. In other words, some people might think that Jesus is telling that whether or not you come to Jesus (become a believer of Jesus Christ) is already planned by God.
My thoughts on this are, it is better not to think that way or said another way, there is more important aspect of the verse to reflect upon. If you pursue the concept of predestination, people might think that God is inviting only certain individuals and not others. There is a possibility that someone can replace God’s thinking by one’s individual predetermination.
So what does it mean “No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father”? I would like to reflect on this verse further. Here, I would like to revisit what Pastor Ito said about Rev. John Wesley, two months ago, during this year’s retreat.
Rev. John Wesley who started the Methodist movement was a strict precept advocate from the Anglican Church in the UK. When he came to United States to evangelize Native Americans, he believed that if you proceed with Christian faith methodologically salvation was assured, that meant if you lived strictly according to Biblical law, you would be saved. However, his mission did not go well.
Then, he went back to England. One day, at the place called Aldersgate, he happened to listen to Moravian missionary Peter Boehler’s message discussing Martin Luther’s precept of Roman’s Chapter 3 that was written a couple of hundred years ago at the time. The point of the Chapter 3 of Romans was: Human beings are always sinners. Even if a sinner tries to atone by working hard or by his or her own ability, you cannot be saved.
For all human beings, God put Jesus forward as a sacrifice of atonement so that people who believe in Jesus are justified. In other word, to become a believer of Christ is totally God’s grace, God’s gift, rather than through one’s own effort or ability. The issue is whether or not you receive God’s gift by believing in Him.
Let me explain about God’s gift a little bit differently, although are not Peter Boehler’s words, think about a simple but valuable gift. Let’s say, Valentine’s chocolates you receive. The Valentine’s gift is usually wrapped with ribbon. So in order to eat the individual chocolates it takes a little bit of time to do so. You remove the ribbon, unwrap the paper, maybe open the box, and take individual chocolates and eat them. God’s gift in this example is like ready-to-eat chocolate – no unwrapping required. In other words, without hard work or test, you just receive God’s gift.
When he realized this about God’s grace, Wesley felt that his heart was warmed up, and he got it. Then what happened for Methodist Church was that its mission amazingly expanded not only in the United States but throughout other parts of the world.
So again, let me ask the same question, what does it mean when Jesus said, “No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father”? I believe Jesus meant that to come to Jesus or to become a believer, it cannot be accomplished by one’s own ability or efforts, but it is only through our Father’s gift, Jesus Christ. And the real matter is whether or not you receive Jesus in believing in Him.
I believe Christian faith starts with the receipt of God’s tremendous gift believing in Him rather than studying very hard or memorizing Biblical verses. And in our life in Christ, we continue to receive Jesus’ words and sacraments and we are created new. When we receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ, why not contemplate the simple yet deep meaning of faith in Christ? We are sent out to the world with Joy and new spiritual energy that God gives us through his Word and sacraments to share His Grace. Amen. Pr. H. Adachi
