詩編 34: 9-14, フィリピ 4:4-9, ヨハネ 14:27
主の平安が豊かに注がれますように！
今日どのような気持ちでこの日を迎えているだろうか？日本では8月15日土曜の正午、それは西海岸時で8月14日の午後７時に、太平洋戦争の終戦後、ちょうど70年となった。なにをもって終戦と呼ぶかは、昭和天皇が、無条件降伏を認め、天皇自ら肉声で、玉音放送として、日本国民に向けて放送された。 さらに、後に多くの言語に翻訳されて、世界にも紹介された。
昭和天皇の言葉の一部を口語訳にしたものを紹介したい。「今後日本国の受けるべき苦難はきっと並大抵のことではなかろう。（中略）しかしながら、私は時の巡り合せに逆らわず、堪えがたくまた忍びがたい思いを乗り越えて、未来永劫のために平和な世界を切り開こうと思うのである。」また最後の段落では「責任は重くかつ復興への道のりは遠いことを覚悟せよ。」 との言葉があった。
戦後70年たって、経済的な復興は見事に達成されたのかもしれない。また戦後70年の間に、日本だけを見れば、たしかに戦争は起きず、平和だったといえるかもしれない。 しかし、未来永劫のために平和な世界を切り開くという点においては、現在世界各地で、戦争は10箇所で起こっているともいわれる。 世界平和への道はまだまだ遠い。
そのような中で、キリスト教徒として、この世界をいかに生きていくように、今日、主なる神は私たちに話されているのだろうか？ どのように平和を実現していけるのだろうか？ 第一日課として、読まれた詩編の言葉には、「平和を捜し、追い求めよ。」という言葉が語られていた。 そして、その言葉の前には、「主を畏れて、また舌を悪から、唇を偽りから遠ざけて、平和を求めるように。」とあった。
そこには、平和を求めるということは、必ずしも暴力とか、武器をもって戦わないことが、平和をということではないのだと思う。 私たちの交わす言葉において、口から出る言葉も、どんなにか暴力的なことになってしまうか、相手を傷つけてしまうかを、よくわきまえるように言われていると思う。 平和を探し、求めるということは、行動が平和的な行動をするだけではなく、心の上でも平安が求められるということになってくる。
そのように考えると、私たちの身も心も平和な状態に達するということ、しかも世界中の民が、その状態に達するということは、はてしなく道のりの遠いことのように思えるし、とても達成できそうもないことのようにさえ思える。
いったい、神様、私たちは、平和に向けて、どうしたらよいのでしょう？ 今日与えられていた福音書、ヨハネ14章27節は、十字架に架かる前に、イエスが弟子たちに、さらに人類に残されている最高の言葉であるようにも感じる。
「わたしは、平和をあなたがたに残し、わたしの平和を与える。わたしはこれを、世が与えるように与えるのではない。心を騒がせるな。おびえるな。 」 と弟子たちに話された。そしてその翌日の金曜日には、十字架に架かり、日没前に、イエスは墓に葬られる。
しかし、三日後、日曜日には復活して、なにも暴力を防ぐことができなかった弟子たちをいっさいとがめることなく、赦し、「あなたがたに平和があるように」と言われ、主の真理の霊を注いでくださった。
今日、日曜日、世界中のキリスト教会で、なぜ礼拝の時があるのだろうか？ 今日、新たに、日曜日に礼拝の時が与えられているのは、主イエスが復活し、全人類を赦し、そして「あなたがたに平和があるように。」と言われたのが日曜日だったから、毎週日曜日、キリスト教会では、礼拝の時がある。
毎週、日曜日は、復活の日であり、神の憐れみの深さ、その寛大さに、私たちは、驚かされ、ひたすら主を畏れ、崇める。主イエスが与えてくださる平和について、その意味を深く考えよう。 人間的な思いからすれば、説教の最初で述べたように、世界平和はとてつもない遠くのゴールのように感じる。 しかし、キリスト教徒として、たとえ、イエスが十字架に架かられた週末があろうが、世界のいろいろなところで戦争が起こった過去があろうが、先週、金曜あるいは土曜かもしれないが、どんな悲惨なできごとがおきようが、もちろん私たち過去を認め、罪を告白する。そして主が復活した日曜日には、神の憐れみが与えられることを実感する。 私たちは、それらの過去のことは、反省はするが、もう心配はせず、こわがらなくてよい。
今日という日曜に、イエスが与えてくださる平和、それが私たちが想像できる平和とは大きく異なる、主イエスの平和を覚えて、喜びあふれる思いで、イエスの体と血をいただこう。 人類は2000年間、とても不思議な聖餐式、主の体であるパンを裂き、それを分ち合い、また主の血であるぶどう酒を、わたちあってきている。
人間の頭では世界平和が依然、遠くはるか先のことのように思える、しかし、われわれは主イエスから赦し、主の愛、主イエスにおける平安をいただこう。 そのパンとぶどうジュースに、イエスが存在している。 そのパンとぶどう酒に、主の赦し、主の愛、イエスにある平安、が存在している。 神の平和は、実はもうここにある。 マルチンルターキング博士が示唆していたように、神が与える平和とは、最終目的ではないのだ、しかし、平和はそのものは、手段であり、われわれが歩む道である。 わたしたちは、その神の平和、主の体とパンを、さらに多くの人々と分ち合い人生を歩もう。そして、主の体である教会が、ますます、主の御心に満ちたものになっていきますように！

“A Long Way to Go?”

May Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!
What do you feel today? In Japan time, at noon, Saturday August 15, which was in Pacific Daylight Saving Time, 8 p.m., on Friday, August 14, it was exactly 70 years after the end of WWII.
70 years ago, at that time, the Japanese Emperor declared unconditional surrender and his speech was broadcast all over Japan and later it was translated into different languages and rebroadcast all over the world.
In his speech, he mentioned, “The hardships and sufferings to which Our nation is to be subjected hereafter will be certainly great…it is according to the dictates of time and fate that We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is insufferable.”
Although it is not very clear in this English translation, the Emperor was envisioning “Peace for all over the world.” And, he also mentioned in his last paragraph, “mindful of its heavy burden of responsibility, and of the long road before it.”
After 70 years, Japan geographically has not been an aggressor and there has been no war (involving them) during the post-war period, but if you looked back including other regions, the Korean and Vietnam wars happened, and if we look at today’s world, we have about 10 simultaneous wars somewhere in the world. We are far away from the peace of the whole world for all the generations to come. It seems like we have a long way to go.
Given these circumstances, how are we to live in this world as Christians? What is God, Jesus Christ, telling to us today? How may we be closer to the goal of worldwide peace?
In Psalm 34 that was read a few minutes ago, “Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”
I believe “seeking and pursuing peace” is not just ending war or stopping fights using weapons, it is also getting away from hurtful and/or violent words during everyday conversations. I believe the Psalm is teaching us not only about a visible, practical peace but references peace of mind. If we think of peace this way, attaining a peaceful state of mind and body, all over the world, may be even farther away.
How can we reach that kind of peace? I believe today we are given wonderful words of Jesus from John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” These words were given to disciples one night before he was crucified. After he left this word, the next day, on Friday, he was killed and buried.
However, on the third day, Jesus was resurrected and forgave disciples who could not stop the crucifixion, then he breathed the Holy Spirit on them, saying “Peace be with you.”
Today, why are we worshipping God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit? Because Sunday is the day when Jesus was resurrected, forgave all human beings, and said “Peace be with you.” God is amazingly generous and merciful. That is why we worship the Lord on Sunday.
Let’s think deeply about the peace that Jesus gave us. Worldwide peace seems a concept that that will be a long road and take much more time to achieve. However, as Christians, we are living in the eternal life because of Jesus’ love and forgiveness. Therefore, even though we acknowledge and repent all our sins of course, we do not worry about the terrible incidents happened to us, in the past, or last week, or last Friday or Saturday.
This Sunday, why don’t we joyfully receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ contemplating the peace that Jesus gives us that is very different from the peace that the world can give. For almost 2000 years after the crucifixion, we have been breaking bread and consuming the sacrament mysteriously.
Although we have not reached the goal of peace that is still very far away in human thinking, why don’t we continue receiving God’s forgiveness, Jesus’ love, and peace in Christ. In the Sacrament, we believe the presence of God, the presence of peace. Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. indicated, “the peace that God gives is not the goal but peace itself is the means and is the way we walk.” We are called to share the body and blood of Christ and to shape our lives for peace.
