マルコ7:31-37
聖霊の息吹が豊かに注がれますように!
リラックスしているだろうか？ 今日のビーチサンデー、リラックスした服装で礼拝堂に集っていることに感謝。 私は高校卒業後、最初に入学した大学での専門は電子回路だった。 電子回路の教授が電子回路のことで教えてくれたことはほとんと覚えていない。 しかし、彼が卒業式のあと、リラックスする時間を大切にするようにと教えてくれたことをはっきり覚えている。 彼によれば、リラックスしているときに、もっともクリエイティブになれるから。
しかし、クリエイティブになれるといっても、どんな創造も、一人の人間が突然なにかを創りだすということはなくて、なにかの情報のインプットや、なにかに誘発されたひらめきがあり、創造がおこっている。 そこにはさまざまなヒントやおかれた環境が関係している、そして考える余裕、もあって実現している。 私は、創造も救いも、じつはすべて、主によって実現していて、人間はあくまで、そのCo-creator なのだと思う。
今日、与えられた福音書を読んでいくなかで、神の創造と救いに関係することが出てきてくるので、そのような神の創造についても思いうかべ、そして、私たちも、その神の創造と救いの業に参画したいと思う。
さて、与えられた福音書、目立った言葉はなんだろう。 ギリシャ語でも、もちろん英語にも日本語にもない言葉、”Ephphatha” という言葉が書かれている。その意味は、日本語では「開け」となっているが、イエスが使っていたアラム語の言葉、Ephphathaを、なぜマルコはそのまま残したのだろうか？
この耳の聞こえない人に対して、イエスは男の耳の中に指をいれ、つばを吐いた手で男の下に触れ、”Ephphatha”という言葉で叫ばれると、男の耳が聞こえるようになった。 イエスの不思議な行いによって、聞こえるようになり、話すこともできるようになる。
この話はマルコ7章だけが記述している。私は、この聖書に訳された言葉「開け」が書かれようが書かれまいが、どんな意味かわからなかったとしても、この箇所が人々におおいに希望を抱けるようにしているのではないかと思う。少なくとも、私たち夫婦にとってはそうだった。
実は、私の妻、さと子は若いころから、右耳が聞こえにくいと言っていた。 結婚したころは、まだ聞こえにくい程度だったが、結婚して10年ほどたったときには、ほとんど聞こえていないようになってしまった。そこで、中野近辺の何人かの耳鼻科の先生にも相談したが、皆、成す術無しとのことで、左耳だけでも正常なのだから、良しということかと思った。
ところがある方が、神尾記念病院というところに行ったらどうかと紹介してくれた。 神尾とは神の尾っぽということで、私は、神の中でもその尾っぽ、とても謙虚な名前に思い、わたしは、良いと思った。
そして、神尾病院の詳細検査の結果、人間の骨として一番、小さい骨といわれる鐙骨を、人口骨に変える手術をすれば、聞こえるようになるという診断だった。 ただし、手術後の休養が大切で、二週間入院とのことだった。あたまの中では、理解できても、そんなただでさえ小さいさと子の、その耳の中にある、最小の神からいただいた骨を、人間が作ってしまうことができるのか。 また、さと子の骨をどうやって人口骨に変えることができるのかよくわからなかった。ただ、私たちはDr. God’s Tailを信じた。
その時、私たちの３人の子供たちは、9歳、7歳、4歳で、２週間の入院は、たいへんだとは思ったが、実家の協力も得られるので、手術をGoすることにした。 結果として、おみごと、さと子の耳は手術直後から、よーく聞こえるようになった。
というか、退院して家に帰ってくると、子供たちの声が全部、左だけで聞こえていたのが、右でも聞こえるようになり、いかに子供たちの声がうるさいかということがわかるようになったという。 いずれにしろ、私たちはDr. God’s Tailに、そして、背後で働いていてくださった、主なる神を誉め、感謝した。
37節「この方のなさったことはすべて、すばらしい」という群集の反応が出ているが、創世記1章31節「神はお造りになったすべてのものを御覧になった。見よ、それは極めて良かった」という、神の創造のすばらしさを思い出させる。そして、「耳の聞こえない人を聞こえるようにし、口の利けない人を話せるようになる」話は、イザヤ35章5-6節「そのとき、見えない人の目が開き／聞こえない人の耳が開く。そのとき、あるけなかった人が鹿のように踊りあがる。口の利けなかった人が喜び歌う。」という神の救いの預言があったが、マルコ福音書に記述されたイエスによって、それが実現したことを思い起こす。
マルコは、エッファタ、とか、タリタクムという聞きなれない、普通の人には、よくわからない言葉を通して神の創造と救いのわざが、神の子であるイエスの上に実現しているということを伝えようとしたのだと思う。 そして、私は、さと子の耳におこったことが、つまり神の創造や救いが、人類の多くの働きの中で、主なる神の息吹、聖霊の介添えがあって、現在も起こっていることを伝えたい。 そして、どうか、ただエッファタという言葉を信じて、リラックスして聖霊の息吹が自分の心に満たされるようにして、神の創造と救いの業に、わたしたちも参画しよう。 アーメン 安達均
“Ephphatha: Be Opened”

Are you relaxing? I’m thankful for Pastor’s Carl’s leadership and wisdom declaring this Labor Day weekend Sunday as Beach Sunday. Some of you know my major in college was electronics. I learned how to design electronic circuit boards implemented in many kinds of electronic devices. I do not remember much about what my professor taught me about electronic circuits, but there is something I clearly remember him saying at our commencement: Please try to find time to relax; then you may become very creative. As human beings, we are most creative when we are relaxing.
Even though you can be creative, I do not think an individual can create something amazing without inspiration. There is always input from somewhere, information from someone, or great need in a specific area; then those circumstances make someone create or I would say God is always the creator of anything but human beings may potentially become co-creators.
When we read the Gospel to the end, I think it is related to God’s creation and salvation and we realized that humans may join in these activities. In today’s Gospel, what is the most unfamiliar word to our ears? What does the Greek word, “Ephphatha” mean? In English, it is written as “be opened” This word is Aramaic that was spoken by Jesus but the word was not understood by Greeks. Why did Mark choose to use the Aramaic word?
The special and unusual testament about Jesus’ helping of a deaf and mute man is powerful. The man’s hearing was restored by Jesus putting His fingers into the man’s ears and his speech was restored when Jesus spit into His hand and touched the man’s tongue, saying “Ephphatha.” Even without knowing Ephphatha’s precise meaning this Gospel gives hope to people worldwide.
I believe the Gospel of Mark, in which Mark uses the Aramaic word a few times, is conveying that even human beings cannot understand everything how, some unbelievable wonderful things happen with the help of God. At least for me and my wife, it is true and this story gives us continuous hope.
Satoko, my wife, noticed a difficulty hearing in one of her ears about the time when we were going to marry. The level of deafness worsened as time passed. About 10 years later, she told me that she couldn’t hear anything from that ear. So she visited several Otorhinolaryngology (area of medicine that deals with disorders of the ear, nose and throat) clinics near our home, but everyone said nothing could be done and since she could still hear in her other ear, we thought that she would have to endure partial deafness.
But one day, one of our friends recommended visiting a hospital specializing in Otorhinolaryngology located about an hour away from our home by train in Tokyo. The name of the hospital is Kamio Memorial Hospital. Kamio is the last name of the founding doctor of the hospital and in Chinese characters, “神尾”, means God’s Tail. I like the name very much, because for me, God does everything but this doctor is living humbly with the name God’s Tail. Dr. Kamio was inspired to try new techniques other doctors, at the time, thought were impossible.
Anyway, Satoko visited the hospital a few times and took tests and received a diagnosis. The doctor said it is called “otosclerosis” and it can be cured by a surgery to replace her stapes, which is the smallest human bone, from her own damaged stapes to an artificial one. We were told that she would stay in the hospital for about two weeks. We could literally understand what he said, but we could not understand how you could create the smallest ear bone artificially and implant it in her ear, but we just believed in and trusted Dr. God’s Tail.
At that time, our three children were 9, 7, and 4 years old. Taking care of them without my wife would be tough but I knew how to do so…by asking for both of our parents’ help. So we agreed to go ahead with the miraculous surgery. It was a great success and even right after the surgery, she noticed great improvement in her hearing in the previously deaf ear.
When she came home, she realized how noisy our children truly were, because in the past, she listened to their voices or any noises only from one ear. But then, listening using both her ears she realized there was twice as much noise. Anyway, we thanked God and Dr. God’s Tail.
At the end of today’s Gospel, in verse 37, They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well.” This reminds us of the end of the 1st chapter of Genesis, God’s creation story, “he saw that all he created, it was very good!” Also, I believe the story that the deaf man is healed by Jesus is prophesied by Isiah 35:5-6, “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
I believe that the Gospel of Mark, in which sometimes we listen to unfamiliar words like “Ephphatha” and “Talitha Koum” makes us believe that God’s creation and salvation happens through Jesus, the son of God. And that even now, in modern times, we experience God’s miraculous creation and salvation with the help of the Holy Spirit. Consider this, why not become a part of God’s creation and salvation by just trusting Jesus’ word “Ephphatha” while you relax and let the Holy Spirit come to you? Amen. Pr. Hitoshi
