マルコ8:27-38
主なる神、イエスキリストの慈しみと恵みが この礼拝堂に集まった人々の心の中に豊かに注がれますように。
私の友人と食事をしたとき、その友人は、私がいままで考えもしなかったことを話だした。 その時、彼は56歳だと思うが、「平均寿命まで生きたとして、もう７０００回くらいしか、夕食を食べる機会はないと思うと、一回一回の食事を本当に大切にしたいと思う。」 と話していた。
肉体的な死に、日々、近づいているというのは事実だ。 先日隼人君が生まれた。 うまれたばかりではあるが、この世に生きている人、だれをとっても、実は、日々、肉体的な死に近づいている。 せっかく教会に来たのに、「安達牧師、そんな気のめいる話はしないでください。」という方もいるかもしれない。 しかし、これは、本当に気のめいってしまうような話なのだろうか。
もちろん、日々運動や健康食に気をつけて、より長生きすることができるという話はあるのだろう。 しかし、所詮、その長くなった人生でも、究極的には、やはり、その長くなった肉体的な死に向かって近づいている。
本日与えられた福音書、16章におよぶマルコ福音書のなかで、前半の最後、８章の最後をさきほど拝読した。 ここは、イエスの宣教に大きな転換期にさしかかったともいえる箇所、それは、８章の前半までは、イエスの宣教活動は安定した上り坂だった、しかし、今日の箇所以降は、イエスの急激な下り坂をくだっていったともいえる。
8章半ばまでに書かれたことは、イエスは多くの人々の生活を大きく変えることに成功した。 たとえば、イエスは奇跡的に病人を癒したり、目がみえない、耳が聞こえない、しゃべれない人々を見事に、目をみえるようにしたり、耳が聞こえるようにしたり、しゃべれるようにした。 あるいは、5000人の空腹のなかにあった人々、さらに4000人もの人をも、わずかな食料にもかかわらず、満腹にした。 そのイエスの姿は、まさに全能の方、最高の医者のようでもあり、偉大な政治家にもなれそうな人だった。
ところが８章の後半に入って、様相が変わってくる。 イエスは、弟子たちに「あんたがたは自分のことを誰だというのか？」と質問する。 そこで、でしゃばりというか、おっちょこちょいのペトロは、「あなはメシア」であるとこたえる。これはすばらしい答えで、大当たりなのだ。 しかし、ペトロには大きな勘違いがあった。
メシアとはどういう意味なのだろう。。。ごはんを食べさせる飯屋（めしや）じゃない。 もう少し違う発音をするなら、メサイア。メサイアあるいはメシアとは、油注がれたもの。それは、旧約聖書の世界では、超人的な英知と能力を持ってイスラエルを治める方の意味。 ペトロのイメージは、イエスがこれから、超人的にイスラエルを政治的にも治めて、ローマの圧力からも解放してくださる、そんな感覚で、メシアという言葉を使ったように思われる。
すると、イエスは、はじめて、人の子がユダヤ教の指導者たちによって、排斥され殺されること、しかし三日目には復活することになっていることを話す。 ペトロは復活するなんていうことは聞いていなかったのだろう。 最後まで話をよく聞かずというか理解することができないまま、イエスに反駁する。 「イエス様、そんなことがあってはなりあませーーーん。」
するとペトロは、イエスから「サタンよ、引き下がれ」つまり、悪魔よ引き下がれといわれてしまう。 悪魔と呼ばれてしまう、ペトロ。 そこには、ペトロの勘違いをイエスは見抜いて言われているのだと思う。 そして、イエスは、私に従いたいものは、自分を棄て、自分の十字架を担いで歩むように。という話をされる。
いったい、イエスは、弟子たちに、本当に何を言いたかったのだろうか。 また、今日の福音書を通して、主イエスは現代の私たちに何を教えようとされているのだろうか？
イエスは、圧倒的な知識と力をもって、イスラエルを治める政治家ではなかった。 そして、イエスに従うこととは、権力をもつことでもなく、金銭的に裕福になって有名になる、いわば、ドナルドトランプのような人間になることでもない。 イエスは神の子であり、同時に人の子であり、それは神が創造されたすべての人類のその魂を、つないでいくような方だった。 そして、人の子として、人類が体験する最高の苦しみをいっしょに体験し、またわたしたちの罪をぬぐってくださるような方。
そして現代を生きる人間は、とくにアメリカのような国に住んでいる人は、イエスが体験したような十字架刑を体験する可能性はとても低いと思うが、イエスの言われる十字架を担ぐとは、私たちが生きていくなかで、たいへんな痛みを体験するということではないだろうか？ 「安達牧師よ、キリスト教を信じることが、痛みを体験することなどなく、健康で長生きができて、経済的にも豊かになるということを教えないのですか？」 といいたくなるかもしれない。
申し訳ないが、それは、ペトロの勘違いと同じ勘違いがあるのかと思う。 キリスト教の牧師として、キリスト教徒になるということは、痛みを体験しないとか、破産しないということを保証する、ということではない。しかし、どんな困難が訪れようが、イエスの信仰において、父と子と聖霊なる方がそばにいらしてくださること、その困難をいっしょに体験してくださっていることを、保証する。
そして、イエスが三日後に死から復活されたように、私たちも死を克服し、永遠の命に与れることをぜひ、覚えておいて欲しい。 イエスの愛と慈しみにより、世の救い主のおかげで、私たちは喜びをもって、永遠の命に生きることができる。 それゆえ、肉体的な死を迎えることが現実であっても、希望をもって歩み、肉体的な痛みも、決して気のめいってくるような話ではなくなる。ぜひ、イエスの信仰により、どんな苦しみを体験するかもしれない将来があっても、主にある喜びを覚えて、歩んで参りたい。アーメン

“Peter’s Misunderstanding”
Mark 8 27-35
May the Mercy and Grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be richly poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary!
When I was eating dinner with a friend, he said something I’ve never thought about… according to him, he was about 56 at that time, “Assuming that I live in healthy condition until 75, I do not think I can eat a healthy dinner more than 7000 times for the rest of my life, so I enjoy dinner every time since it is so priceless.
It is true that everyone is getting closer to physical death every day. The newborn, Hayato, was born to the Fukuyama family, a few weeks ago, even for him, the number of days he lives for the rest of his life is less every day. Some people might not want to hear such a depressing fact and say, “Please do not talk about such a depressing topic, Pastor Adachi!” But, my question is: Is it truly a depressing topic?
Of course, people may say that if you exercise and eat healthy food every day, you may live longer and number of days you live will be increased. That may be true, but even so, still day by day, you are getting closer to the end of your physical life.
The Gospel given today, in the 16 total chapters of Mark, is the end of the first half, the end of the 8th chapter. You may say that the life of Jesus’ ministry had a turning point from a steady upward climb to a steep downward fall…
The ministry described until the portion just before today’s Gospel, speaks about Jesus miraculously changing people’s lives, like a blind person who could see, a deaf person had hearing restored, a mute person became a person who could speak. It also describes when he fed 5000 hungry people and 4000 hungry people with only small portions of food. Jesus was almighty, like a perfect doctor and he could be a powerful politician.
However, at the end of chapter 8, he asked a seemingly strange question: he said to his disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Then Peter, the intrusive and careless disciple who thinks that “I am the leader of the disciples” said, “You are the Messiah, the savior,” which was a wonderful answer.
Messiah means, “Anointed,” the one who controls Israel with his superior knowledge and power. For Peter, Jesus would be the powerful king who saves every person in Israel and controls Israel, thus freeing the country from the Roman Empire’s rule. Therefore, Peter thought that he is the Messiah. However there was an enormous misunderstanding.
Then, Jesus said for the first time to the disciples that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. However the head disciple, Peter, who probably did not listen to the word of the Lord until the end and misunderstood what Jesus taught, took him aside and began to rebuke Jesus for saying this.
Then Jesus said “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” Jesus pointed out that Peter did not understand him at all. Then he said to the crowd, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
What did Jesus truly want to teach his disciples? And through the Gospel today, what does the Lord, the savior of the world, truly want to tell us in the 21st century?
Jesus was not a powerful politician and to become a follower of Jesus does not mean becoming a powerful, wealthy and famous person like Donald Trump. Jesus is the son of God and at the same time son of man who reconnects his soul to all people God created. He experiences all of humanity’s suffering and cleanses our sins.
So for the people who live in the twenty first century especially those in the United States, we will almost certainly not be crucified physically, but don’t you think that for the followers of Jesus to take up cross equals suffering some pain and loss in our lives? You might want to ask, “Pastor why don’t you teach that to become a Christian means not suffering and not being broken but to live long and heathy life and becoming financially rich.”
Sorry though, as a Pastor of the Church of Christ, I cannot guarantee that to become a Christian is not suffering or not being broken….however, even in the midst of difficulties, Faith in Jesus Christ guarantees you that God, the father, Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are with you and experience your difficulties together with you.
Please remember, as Jesus is risen on the third day, Sunday, we may live eternally conquering our deaths. Because of the love and mercy of Jesus Christ, the Messiah of the world, we may joyfully live with Jesus acknowledging the love of Jesus that continues beyond our deaths. It is this fact that gives us hope and the eventual end of our earthly lives is no longer depressing. Amen.
