マルコ10:46-52
主イエスの恵みと平安が集まった会衆の上にも、また聖霊の働きにより、今日はここに集えない方々の上にも豊かに注がれますように！
わたしの学んだ神学校、ミネソタにあるルーサーセミナリは、アメリカにある８つのアメリカ福音ルーテル教会の中でも規模の大きな神学校だった。幸いなことに、ルター派の神学者でだけでなく、様々な修派の神学者たちが、教壇にたっていた。
あるとき、ゲストスピーカとして、もともとはメソディスト系の旧約聖書学者が、講演に招かれており、聞いたいた。最初に、「ルターは、聖書のみ、恵みのみ、信仰のみということを言っているが、“のみ”といいながら、なんで三つあるのかがわからなかった」という話からはじめた。最近、ルーテル復活ルーテル教会の信者になられた方もいて、はじめて「聖書のみ、恵みのみ、信仰のみ」という言葉を聞き、同じ疑問を持たれている方もいるかもしれない。
「聖書のみ、恵みのみ、信仰のみ」という言葉は、ルター派教会のトレードマークのようになっているが、みなさんは、どんな風に捕らえているだろうか。今日は、宗教改革記念日ということもあり、ルターだけではなく、16世紀の多くの宗教改革のリーダたちが主張した、「聖書のみ、恵みのみ、信仰のみ」ということについて、与えられた福音書から考えを深めてみたい。
福音書記者マルコは、バルティマイという盲人が、イエスに近寄り、「憐れんでください。」と二回、さけんでいる様子を伝えている。 盲人の心境を思うと、とてつもない憐れみをイエスは覚えたのだろう。 というのは、当時の社会情勢から、なにか不幸があったり、体の不具合があったりする場合、とかく、過去に罪深い行為、悪い行いがあったから、あるいは、先祖がなにか罪をおかしたから、そんな不遇な目にあっているという解釈がされた。
しかし、聖書が伝えていることは、私達人間は、みんな罪人なのである。 「私は神に対して罪人ではないが、あなたは神に対して罪を犯した。」などということ自体が罪ということになってきてしまう。 そして、イエスはそのような社会に憤りを覚えていた。
目が見えない上に、バルティマイは、神の罰を受けているからなのだ、というレッテルを貼られて苦しんでいるバルティマイの気持ちを、イエスはハラワタがひしひしと痛むほどに、わかっていたのだと思う。 そして、騒いでいたバルティマイをしかって黙らせようとしていた人々とは、逆に、イエスは、バルティマイのさけんだ通り、憐れみを持って、「あの男を呼んでくるように。」と言われる。
そして、目が見えなかったバルティマイが開眼する。 バルティマイの目が見えるようになったことについて、イエスは「行きなさい。あなたの信仰があなたを救った。」と話された。「あなたの信仰」とはなんだろうか？ その信仰とは、頭でイエスを理解した気になって、「イエスを救い主として信じます」ということより、バルティマイが、イエスこそなんとかしてくださるという、自分の希望も拠り所もすべて、イエスに掛けて、生きていこうとする態度そのものが、信仰なのではないだろうか。
バルティマイは、イエスからは、「行きなさい」といわれたにもかかわらず、イエスから離れていくようなことはなく、イエスの道に従ったと、今日の福音書の最後に書かれている。 イエスの道に従う信仰は、十字架の死と復活を通して、明らかになる。それは、イエスが十字架に架けられるとき、逃げていってしまった弟子たちさえも、イエスが赦し愛してくださること。そして、人種や国籍を超えて、私たち一人一人を憐れんでくださっている、という神からの恵みのみにより、イエスに全信頼をおき、すべてをイエスに掛けて生き続ける信仰があるのではないだろうか。
さらに、そのイエスの恵みを、キリスト者が覚えることができるのは、聖書に綴られた、御言葉のみを通して、人間に与えられるのではないだろうか。 もちろん、われわれの実生活の体験の中で、イエスの愛を覚えることはある、しかし、その背後には、聖書のみに語られたストーリがあるから、恵みを覚えることができるのではないだろうか？
いや、そんなことはない、私は聖書は読まなくても、映画や小説の中で、イエスの恵みに触れることがあるという方がいると思う。 しかし、そのような映画や小説ができている背景には、聖書のストーリ、神の愛が大元になっている。
ルター派教会のトレードマーク、「聖書のみ、恵みのみ、信仰のみ」という言葉は、ちょっと言葉を補足して言い換えるなら、「聖書のみに顕された、イエスから与えられる恵みのみを通して、イエスを救い主と信じることができ、その信仰のみによって、罪深い全ての人間が正しき者とされる。」と言い換えることができるのではないだろうか。
新しい1週間、聖書の描かれたバルティマイのストーリを通して、与えられた主イエスの恵みにより、さらに信仰が与えられ、バルティマイのストーリが、皆様一人一人のストーリーに重なってきますように。そして新たに喜びを与えられ、主イエスに従い続けることができますように！ アーメン

Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone

May Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ be poured unto each one of you!
I received theological education through Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, which is the largest seminary out of 8 ELCA seminaries. Luckily, I could listen to lectures or discourses not only from Lutheran theologians or Bible scholars, but also from many other denomination scholars.
One day, I was listening to a lecture spoken by a guest scholar of Old Testament from Methodist. He started with the words something like this, “Martin Luther said “Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone” but it did not make sense to me at all at first, because if alone, why three?” Since some of you became members of Resurrection Lutheran very recently, you might have the same kind of question. Or for some of you, “Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone” was the first time to hear it….
“Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone” is a kind of trade mark for Lutheran Church. For those of you who are Lutherans for many years, how do you answer to the question by the Methodist scholar? Today, it is the Reformation Sunday. Why don’t we think about this question a little bit deeper?
In the Gospel text today, Bartimaeus, who was a blind person, came closer to Jesus shouting twice, “Have mercy on me.” When Jesus thought about Bartimaeus, I believe, he felt strong compassion. Because, at that time, it was normal that if someone has issues like blindness, or any type of disease, it was thought that that person did something wrong or did sin. Or his or her ancestors did sin that was why those people need to deserve God’s punishment.
However, what the Bible teaches is that all human beings are not perfect and sinners as Adam and Eve became sinners. If I say I am not a sinner to God but you are, what I say itself is sin. Probably Jesus was not comfortable at all to the society.
Jesus understood deeply how Bartimaeus was feeling about. Therefore, instead of letting people shouting back to him and making him quiet, Jesus asked one of his servants to bring him.
Then today’s story describes that a miracle happened, Bartimaeus could see after he met with Jesus. He said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” What does “your faith mean”? It is very different from what Peter said to Jesus a few chapters before, “You are the Messiah!” It is very different from an intellectual understanding Jesus as Messiah, for Bartimaeus did not call him “Messiah!” Rather, he trusted that only Jesus could do something for him. He bet his life to Jesus and leaned him 100 present. I would say, his faith was appeared in his desperate behavior rather than his words.
Then, even though Jesus said “Go” to Bartimaeus, he did not leave Jesus and his disciples, but “followed him on the way.”
The faith to follow Jesus may be possible because of Jesus unconditional compassion, as it were, by God’s grace alone. By grace alone, people may be able to follow Jesus, the faith in Christ.
Then, if we think about why we can sense grace, I believe scripture alone bring us God’s grace, his Love and mercy. Of course, for some people, they may sense God’s grace from his or her daily incidents. However, those feelings may be appear because what you sense may be closely related what the Bible teaches us.
Well, there are people who say, “Even if I do not read the Bible, I can sense God’s Grace through novels or Bible.” However, in our world, either through novels or movies, stories in these novels are probably based on Bible.
About the Lutheran Trademark, “Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone” may be paraphrased by adding a few words. “We may have faith in which we follow Jesus as Messiah by grace alone, and that grace is revealed by Scripture alone. And by the faith in Jesus alone, we, sinners, are righteous.”
Now a new week is given to us. I pray that through the story of Bartimaeus in the Bible, God’s grace is poured unto each one of you, and the story may become your story, and in that story you follow Jesus with Joy! Amen
