ルカ 3:15-18, 21-21
主の恵みと平安が、集まった会衆の心の中に、豊かに注がれますように！
カトリックの教会には、よくあるが、礼拝堂に入る前に、小さなお皿のようなものがあって、そこに、水が入っている。 カトリックの信者には、礼拝堂に入る前に、その水にちょっと手をつけて、そして十字架をきってから礼拝堂に入る方がいる。
私の学んだミネソタ州セントポールのルーサーセミナリーの礼拝堂は、礼拝堂に入ったところに大きな洗礼盤が設置されていて、洗礼盤には水がはってある。 また、アーバインのコンコーディア大学のCUセンターというコンサートをよく行なうところだが、礼拝堂だ。 そこも正面の入り口から入ってすぐに、洗礼盤があり水が入っている。
さて、この礼拝堂は、どうなっているだろうか。 入り口には洗礼盤はないものの、聖餐式を受けるときに、聖壇にくるが、聖壇の前に、なるべく洗礼盤をおくようにしている。 それには、どういう意味があるのだろうか。
教会の礼拝堂に入る、あるいは、聖餐を受けるというときに、自分の受けた洗礼を思い出すということが、とても意味があること。 あるいは、まだ、洗礼を受けていないが、礼拝堂に入る、あるいは、聖壇の周りに集まるという事実のなかに、洗礼へと近づいていることが起こっているのだと思う。
与えられた福音書の箇所に入っていきたい。 ルカ３章、15－17節では、ヨハネの話が出ている。 ヨハネとは、洗礼者ヨハネのことで、もともとは、イエスの幼なじみのヨハネで、６ヶ月年上。 マリアの妊娠が、天使につげられたとき、すぐに、エリザベトを訪ねたのを覚えているだろうか？ そのエリザベトのおなかの中にいた赤ちゃんが、後の洗礼者ヨハネである。
ヨハネは、イエスを証するために生まれていたといっても良い。 荒れ野で、毛皮の衣を着て、野みつやイナゴを食べて生活していたらしい。 それは、世の注目をひいた。 いまでも現代風ヨハネはいます。 人々は、ヨハネが救い主かもしれないと思い、ヨルダン流域の荒れ野にやってきて、ヨハネから「悔い改め」の洗礼を受けていた。
しかし、ヨハネは、決して、自分が救い主だとはいわなかった。 私より後から来られる方こそ、すごい方で、私はその方の靴ひもさえ、結ぶ価値のない人間だとして、謙り、後に来られる方に注目するように民衆の心を仕向けた。 洗礼者ヨハネは、後にくるイエスは、聖霊と火で、あなたがたに洗礼を授けるであろうと預言していた。
そこに、まさに、イエスが顕われる。 しかし、すぐにはイエスがヨハネの言った通りに聖霊と火で洗礼をさずけるおということは、起こらなかった。逆に、イエスが謙り、ヨハネから洗礼を受ける。 ひとりの民衆と同じように、洗礼を受ける。すると、たいへんなことがおこる。そのたいへんなこととは三つの特徴的なこと。
今日の福音書の後半にそのことが書いてあった。その一つ目は、まず天が開けてしまう。 これって、どういうことかよくわからない。 しかし、天の上におられる神が、この世界に介入してくる様子を伝えているのだと思う。 二番目は、聖霊がはとが舞い降りてくるように、目に見える姿で、イエスにくだった。
聖霊とは、はとのようでも、それは、とても力のあるもの。 聖壇横にかかげたバーナーを見てほしい。復活後のイエスが、天に上って行かれたあと、降ってきた聖霊は、聖書の使徒言行録二章に記述されていたように、炎のようだった。 だから聖霊にすごいパワーがある。 さらに三番目、天から「あなたは私に愛する子」という声が聞こえてきた。
この声は、ここでは、天からイエスに告げられている。 現代の私たちが、イエスの生涯を振り返る時、そのイエスは十字架につけられ、殺されたが、三日目に復活し、復活後40日目に、ご自分が天に昇られ神のところに行く前に、弟子たちに、「すべての民をわたしの弟子にしなさい。彼らに父と子と聖霊の名によって洗礼を授けるように」と言われて、天に昇っていかれた。いわゆる宣教命令というもので、その洗礼を、キリスト教会は代々、2000年間さずけつづけてきている。
なにがいいたいかと言うと、私たちの受けた洗礼（あるいはこれから受ける洗礼）で、神がイエスを愛していると言われたように、私たち一人一人にも、必ずしも物理的に聞こえたり、見えたりするものではないが、「あなたは私の愛する子ですよ。」と宣言してくださっている。 そして、炎のような力ある聖霊が、洗礼を受けたものに、与えられて、その聖霊が力となって人生をささえてくださる。
私たちの人生、いやなこと、困難なこと、いろいろある。 先週振り返っても、それぞれにつらいことがあったりしたのではないかと思う。 私は、火曜にいっしょに昼食をとっていた方が、自宅に帰られて、はしごから落ちて、頭を強打して突然亡くなった、と水曜日に連絡を受けた。同じ時期、水曜に日本から連絡が入ったが、父は横浜で転び、頭に１４針も縫うケガをした。 ショックであり、自分はどうしたらいいんだろう、と思うことがやってくる。
しかし、本当にどうしたらよいのかと思う境遇に置かれたとき、完全に放心してしまった時でさえ、かならず「あなたは私の愛する子」と言われる神が、主イエスがいっしょにいてくださる。聖霊が困難、苦難の中で、支えとなってくださる。 その信仰者の生き様のなかに、神が介入してくださっていて、信仰者自体の存在が、イエスの愛を顕す存在となる。なぜなら火のような聖霊がささえてくださるから。だから、「あなたは私が愛する子」と言われ、聖霊がくだった洗礼を受けた事実は、重要であり、その洗礼を、礼拝堂に来る度に、また聖餐を受けるたびに思い出す信仰生活には、とても重要だ。火のような聖霊が、私たちを強めてくださり、どんなにか苦難の中にあっても、偉大なる神の慈しみの業を成してくださる。

“Life Supported by the Holy Spirit and Fire”

May the Grace and Peace of our Lord be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary!
When you go to Catholic Church, you often see water in a small plate at the narthex of the sanctuary…Catholic Christians often dip his or her fingertip into the water and then make a cross on one’s chest before entering the sanctuary.
The sanctuary at the Luther Seminary, where I studied, has a big baptismal font right after when you enter the sanctuary. Some of you have probably visited CU center at Concordia University in Irvine, there is also a big baptismal font right after entering the CU center.
How about this sanctuary? Although there is no baptismal font at the entrance, we usually put the font here before the service. What does this mean?
When entering the sanctuary or before you receive the sacrament of communion, it is very meaningful to remember your baptism. Or if you are not baptized yet, it is meaningful to think about your future baptism…
The Gospel today is Luke 3:15-17 and 21-22. The first portion is about how John, was 6 month older than Jesus, foretold about Jesus. John is John the Baptist, who was in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary was told that she would be pregnant.
We may say that the purpose of John’s life was to testify about Jesus. John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey. Actually, he was like a performer and, in a sense, very charismatic. Many people came to him in the wilderness for repentance and to be baptized in Jordan River. Many people wondered if John was the Christ.
However, John never said he was the Christ, he made the people look at the next person. He proclaimed that the next person will be the great person. John was humble and mentioned that he was not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals and the next person, Jesus would baptize you by the fire and the Holy Spirit.
Then Jesus appeared in front of the many. Like other people baptized by John, Jesus was baptized with other people. He was like one of them. However, when Jesus was baptized, some miraculous things happened. Basically, there were three major incidents.
The first thing was that the heaven was opened. I do not know exactly what that meant, but I believe this is the scene that God’s involvement to the world was from heaven. Then the second thing was that the Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove.
The Holy Spirit is powerful. You might remember that it is described in the second chapter of Acts, the Holy Spirit was like fire and very powerful. Then the third thing was the voice from heaven said, “You are my Son, Beloved.”
Here, this voice focused attention on Jesus. And when we reflect upon the life of Jesus, as you know he was crucified, killed, but resurrected on the third day. Then the forty days after the resurrection he was taken up to heaven. However, before he was taken up, he ordered his disciples, saying “go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Christian Church has been following this great commandment for two thousand years. The church has continuously baptized people for two thousand years.
In the baptism we received, God said to each one of us “you are my son, beloved,” like we heard when Jesus was baptized, even though we could not physically hear this; the powerful Holy Spirit came to our body and support our lives.
In the realities of our lives, we experience many challenges and difficulties. When you look back upon last week, what did you face? My case was, I was eating with my friend last Tuesday, then I was notified on Wednesday that he died because he fell from a ladder and badly hit his head. Nobody was at home with him so nobody knew about the tragic accident until it was too late. Maybe around the same time, my father in Japan Ifell and injured himself. I was also notified on Wednesday. He has 14 stitches and is recuperating now. On Wednesday, I thought should I go to Japan or not? I didn’t know what to do.
While wondering about what to do or in the midst of confusion and even when we are lost, God is always with us, Jesus Christ is within us, and the Holy Spirit is supporting us in the midst of difficulties and challenges. And God is reflecting the heart of Jesus in ourselves; showing His Love, to other people because of the help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the fact that we are told that “You are beloved” by God when baptized, is critically important in our faith. Likewise, remembering our Holy Baptism is so meaningful, every time when we come to worship and every time when we receive Holy Communion. The Holy Spirit’s fire empowers us to be strong and do great things even at the most challenging times. Amen.
