二週間前、母の日の日曜、ＬＣＲとしては、恒例のPSS Project Self Sufficiencyをサポートする日だった。 私はＰＳＳのような働きはとてもすばらしいと思い、応援したいと思っているが、その日、二人の母親、それぞれの子供をつれ、一組目の親子が8時半の礼拝に、二組目の親子が10時の礼拝に来られた。その子たちの名前を覚えているだろうか？ 意味のある偶然だと思ったが、二人ともFaith という名前だった。
その後、はっと気がつかされたが、私たちの子供の一人にも、Faithという名前の子がいると思った。なぜ？ と思われるかもしれない。 母の日の10時の礼拝に出られていた方はご存知だが、献金の最中に、長男がチェロを弾く機会をいただいた。 長男の名前は信。 信は、信じるという意味であり、Faithでもある。 妻と私は、あきらかにFaithを意識して、長男の名前を信にした。
さて今日、与えられた福音書の内容に触れていきたい。12節を読んでどんなことを思われただろうか？ 十字架に架かって、明日には、死に葬られるイエスキリストは、使徒たちに、あなたがたがイエスのした御業をするようになると話している。それも、もっと大きな業をするようになるということになる。イエスのされたことより、もっと偉大なことをするなんて、そんなことはおかしいと思われるかもしれない。しかし、イエスは「私が真理を述べる」と言われた後の語った言葉であることを覚えておきたい。
しかし、ここで注意しなければならないことは、条件があるのだ。イエスは「私を信じるものは」といっておられる。私を信じるとは、どういうことだろうか、まさにFaithなのだと思う。イエスの信仰を持つものは、イエスのされたことより大きなことさえできるという。 そこで、ちょっと考えてみた。 信のしていること、もちろん世界中に、信よりすばらしいチェリストやピアニストはいるが、イエスはどうだったのだろうか？ 信はイエスより偉大な、チェリストやピアニストと言えるのか？？？
もっとも、イエスがチェロを弾いたり、ピアノを弾いたという記録は残っておらず、信がイエスより偉大なチェリストだとか、ピアニストであるかどうかは、間違った質問だと思う。 それより、イエスを信じる信仰のあるものが、イエスより偉大な御業をするという、イエスの言葉の意味をもう少し掘り下げて考えてみたい。イエスを信じるということはどういうことなのか？ Faithとはどういうことなのか？
イエスを信じるということは、神が地球上ではないところ、はるかかなたから神が私たちを見ておられて、私たち人間をコントロールしているような、そういう神様を信じているのではない。 イエスの言葉で、「父なる神が私の中にいる。 また私は、父の中にいる」ということを言っておられた。つまり、この地球に2000年前に来られたイエスの中に、神もおられた。 この地球で寝泊りされた、神がおられる。
ここで、最初に出した、Faithを漢字で書いた場合の「信」にいて説明したい。 信の左側は肉体を持つ人を象徴したものだ。 そして、右側は、「言：ことば」”Word”である。 ヨハネ福音書は、「はじめに言（ことば）があった、その言は神とともにあった。その言は神であった。」という文章ではじまっている。信ということは、神と人がいっしょになった漢字なのだ。 神が人と一体になったことを著す漢字を使って、信じるという意味を表していることに、とても意味深いものを感じる。
また、イエスの語られたことは、父なる神と子なるイエスが一体だというだけでは終わらない。本日の福音書でイエスが語られたことからして、自分がいなくなったあと、父にお願いして真理の霊、つまり神の霊、聖霊を送ってくださる。その霊は私たちの弁護者であり、ずっと私たちとともにいてくださる。その父なる神の送ってくださる霊のおかげで、イエスの名によって祈ることは、なんでもかなえられ、つまり、イエスの業、さらにおおきなる業が可能になる。
今日は三位一体主日であるが、父なる神と、子なるイエス、そして、神が送ってくださる息、聖霊が、一体である、そういう神の存在を、私たちキリスト教者の信仰を覚える日である。 どこか遠くにいる神、この世を見下ろしているような神ではなく、イエスの体となって、この世に下りてきてくださった神である。
神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。イエスの信仰とは、この世の常識として信じられることではなく、わたしたちに与えられる信仰である。そして、その信仰は、聖霊となって、この世の私たちの中に永遠にやどってくださる神を信じること。その信仰は、わたしたちにとてつもない業をさせてくださる。
とても人間の力だけではできないと思っても、イエスの神がおくってくださる霊のパワーのおかげで、大きな事ができたり、あるいは大きな慰めになったりする。 それは、ピアノでもオルガンでも、人間業とは思えないような演奏ができたりする。あるいは、聖書の言葉を聴くなかで、とてつもない困難や悲しみを解消するし、あるいは、信仰者たちどうしが、互いの愛をもって、偉大なミニストリーを行なうことにもなる。父、子、そして聖霊なる三位一体なる神がわたしたちとともにいてくださる。

“Faith Makes Us Do What??”
John 14:11-17
May the Lord’s Grace and Peace be poured into the people’s hearts while listening to this message!
Two weeks ago, on Mothers’ Day, as usual we invited guests from Project Self Sufficiency. Two single mothers and their two daughters attended the two worship services. One mother and her daughter came to the 8:30 a.m. service and another mother and child came to the 10:00 a.m. service. Do you remember their two daughters’ names? Coincidentally, or I would say meaningfully coincidental, the names of both girls were “Faith.”
Then later on, I also realized there was another child whose name was “Faith”. For those of you who attended the 10:00 a.m. service, one of our children played the cello during the offering. His name is “Shin.” The Chinese character of Shin means to believe or “faith.” Satoko, my wife, and I named “Shin” using the character “信”, remembering our faith; that we both strongly believe.
Let’s dive into today’s Gospel text. When you read verse 12, what did you think? One day before he was crucified, our Lord told his disciples, “anyone who believes in me, you do what I have done, even greater works than I have done.” Can the disciples do even greater works? Or can Christians do even greater works than Jesus did? You might think it is impossible… However, remember, this is what Jesus said, after he said, “I will tell you the truth.”
Though, we should be careful, there is a contingency. Jesus said “anyone who believes in me” or “if you believe in me.” What does it mean to “believe in him”? I believe that is the very “faith of Jesus”. If anyone, believes in Jesus, they’re able to do greater works. Then I thought a little bit more… Can we say Jesus was a greater pianist or cellist than Shin or Faith is?
Since there is no record in the Bible that says Jesus played cello or piano of course, we do not know… But we might say many Christians, the church together, have been doing great works to share Jesus’ love because of Faith. Let us think further about faith, believing in Jesus. What is Faith?
To believe in Jesus is very different from believing in a god who, we think, lives far away from us and controls us. In Jesus’ own words, “Father God in me and I in Him.” In Jesus who came to Earth 2000 years ago in a human body, God was there, too. In Christ who lived in this world God was with him.
Here I would like to explain the Chinese character Shin, “Faith.” This character is composed of two parts. The left part represents human. The right part represents “word”. John’s Gospel starts with “In the beginning, there was Word, and the Word was with God. The Word was God. Therefore, the Chinese character “Faith: Belief” is a character that shows human and God together. I believe there is a deep meaning that God can be together with humans.
And what Jesus said did not end with saying God and Jesus are together, Jesus told them after he was gone, he would ask God, the Father, to send the true spirit, God’s spirit. And that God’s spirit is the advocate and dwells with the disciples forever. Because of the Holy Spirit sent from the Father, whatever disciples pray in Jesus name, everything is possible. Disciples who have faith in Him do even greater works than Jesus did.
Today, we call this Holy Trinity Sunday. We remember that our faith is believing in the Father, God, the Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This belief is not believing in a god who is far away, but God who is in Jesus incarnate who came to our world.
For our God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in Him may not come to destruction but have eternal life. This is something we do not believe in because of common sense, but we believe in because of faith given to us. Also we believe that God sent the Holy Spirit, His breath, into the world and dwells within us. Such faith, believing in the Triune God make us do tremendous works.
Even if someone think that he or she cannot do something by themselves, God sends us the Holy Spirit that enables us to do incredible works and Jesus encourages us and comforts us. This might take the form of someone playing cello, piano or playing any sort of sports well. Or while listening to the Word of God, the Holy Spirit enables us to be comforted and make us love one another, and accomplish great ministries together. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit is among us and within us. Amen.
