８月の第二あるいは第三日曜は、第二次世界大戦の終了が８月１５日だったことから、日本のキリスト教会の多くは平和主日としている。
1912年から1953年まで、アメリカから宣教師として派遣されていたローラ・モークという方がいた。 第二次世界大戦が始まる中、在留していた多くのアメリカ人は帰国せざるを得なくなった。 しかし、彼女は「私は福音のため帰国しません。」と断った。結果、戦争中、日本の強制収容所に入れられた。 ある日、収容所では防空壕をほっていた。すると、彼女は「だれのためにほっているのか。」と質問した。「あなたがたのためだ。」との答えが返ってくると、ローラ宣教師は、「私のためなら防空壕は要りませんよ。私は毎晩、雨のように降ってくる爆弾を見て命が縮まる思いがします。あれは、日本人逹の上に落ち、あの下で皆さんが苦しみ、ことに幼い子供たちも死ぬかと思うと、どうか、あの爆弾が私の上に落ちてくるようにと祈らずにはいられないのです。」と言われた。 普通だったら、爆弾が自分に落ちないようにと祈るのに、自分に落ちるようにと祈る、その言葉に収容所の所長は感銘していた。 戦後、収容所の所長は家族で教会に行くようになり、洗礼を受けた。
さて、第二次世界大戦中のエピソードを紹介したが、さらに1900年さかのぼって、新約聖書が書かれた時代がどういう時代だったか考えてみたい。 ある意味、その時代のキリスト教信者たちは、第二次世界大戦中に日本に住んでいた者（日本人アメリカ人を問わず）の体験と似ているような面がある。イエスが十字架に架かるだけではなく、ユダとヨハネ以外の弟子は、殉教した。殉教とは、キリスト信仰を持つがゆえに殺された。キリストを信じるようになった者たちは、迫害される時代になっていった。そのような時代になることを、神なるイエスは、わかっておられたと思う。 イエスは、本日の聖書箇所の少し後、ルカ12章後半で、「私が来たのは平和をもたらすためではなく、火を投じるため、むしろ分裂だ。」と言われていた。 迫害の時代がやってくる中で、イエスは弟子たちに、どう生きていくようにと言われていたのだろうか。そのひとつが、今日の聖書箇所に書いてある。 それは主人が家を留守にしていても、主人がいつ帰ってきて扉をたたいても、すぐにその扉を開けられるように、目を覚まして待っているように。そのイメージは、家の中の扉の近くでじっと寝ないで待っているようにと思われるかもしれない。しかし、これは比喩であって、自分の住む物理的な家ということではなく、弟子たちがどのように考えて、行動するかを示唆していた。つまり、私たちの心を、世の中の流れにまどわされてしまわないようにして、キリストが語られたような生き方をする。それはマタイ5章のイエスの山上の垂訓にあったように、「平和を実現する人々」とか、「自分を迫害する者のために祈る。」という言葉に表れている生き方をし、イエスが再臨してくださるのを待つことを示唆していたと思う。
さて、現在2013年を生きる私たちにとって、どういう生活をしなさいということなのだろうか？ 現代の歴史家や社会学者たちの多くは、しばらく厳しい時代がやって来ると予測している。 それは、歴史を振り返ると、80年から85年おきに、アメリカ合衆国では厳しい時代がやってきている。 アメリカは1940年ごろの第二次世界大戦を経験する80年前の1860年代、60万人の戦死者を出した南北戦争を経験している。 さらに80年さかのぼると、独立戦争の時代である。 ちなみに、日本では第二次世界大戦から80年さかのぼった1860年代は、江戸時代つまり徳川の時代が終わって、さまざまな戦いを経て明治時代になっている。 そのような80年周期で戦争のような時代が起こるのは、リーダになる世代の性格やパターンから80年ごとに大きな試練を体験することになっていると予測されていて、2020年代は、とても厳しい時代を迎えるのではないかと考えられている。 具体的にどのような厳しさなのかはよくわからないが、とにかくそのような時代が来るかもしれないという中で、イエスが2000年前に述べておられたことと、現代の私たちに語られていることは、変わっていないように思う。 それは、聖書の中で、イエスが私たちに命令していることは、洗礼に授かり、パンを裂き聖餐にあずかる生活をしながら、自分を迫害する者のために祈り、平和を実現する者となっていくようにと。 日本のことわざで「負けるが勝ち」という言葉もあるが、争わずに負けることが実は勝利というのは、十字架にかかられたキリストの実践されたこととも言える。 つまり、洗礼と聖餐を与り、み言葉を聴くということをしてゆくことが、平和を実現する者とされていくことになる。 つまり、礼拝に集う生活の中で、み言葉を聴き、洗礼と聖餐にある主の働きに与り、そして礼拝から押し出されて、世の中で行動して行くことがとても重要な生き様ということになる。どうか、みなさん、日曜の礼拝に継続的に参加し、どんな厳しい時代が来ようが、キリストの体であるパンを分かち合い、キリストの言葉によって、確かに平和を実現していく者となり、真の平和の訪れに向かって行動しよう。アーメン。

May the Lord bring grace and peace over the people gathered in this sanctuary! Amen.
August 15 is the anniversary of the end of the World War II for Japanese People, and many Japanese Christian Churches celebrate the second or third Sunday of August as “Peace Lord’s Day”.
My parents and my mother in law were 20, 16, and 13 years old when World War II ended, so they still remember their experiences of the war, although there were some differences in their individual experiences. My mother was living in Japan during the World War II, but my father and my mother in law were in Manshu (Japanese-controlled area within China) when the war ended.
Wherever they were, they understood how painful the war was and felt great hope and peace when the war was over. Therefore, they have a very strong feeling that we should never enter into war again.
So far, I’ve talked about the World War II era, now let’s go back further another 1900 years. That was the age when disciples experienced severe persecutions in the late first century which was similar to hardships that many Japanese youth endured in the middle of 20th century.
After Jesus was crucified and resurrected and then the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, Christ’s followers experienced an even harder time. Not only was Jesus crucified, but many other disciples became martyrs. Most probably, all disciples except Judas and John were killed similarly to Jesus and were crucified.
Actually, Jesus knew what kind of age would come. Although this is the text of the following Sunday, in the latter part of Luke 12, Jesus said, “Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!”
Jesus knew what kind of age it would be…a difficult age would come. What did Jesus suggest regarding how disciples should live? In the Gospel text today his advice is actually written down. It is as follows:
“Be like those who are waiting for their master to return, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes back and knocks.” The literal image might look like this: staying at home near the entrance door without going to sleep. However, this was a metaphor and it’s better not to interpret that the disciples should stay in a house physically. Rather it is better to understand how the disciples should live and act.
In other words, don’t let their hearts be overly-influenced by the world, stay focused on what Jesus said and how He lived. And wait for the coming of Jesus.
What does it mean for us who live in the 21st century? How should we live?
Current historians and sociologists forecast that a difficult age is coming again. Some of you may know that every 80-85 years, the US has experienced major wars. World War II was in the 1940s, 80 years before, there was the Civil War. 80 years before the Civil War, there was the War of Independence, against England.
Japan also experienced WW II as the US did, and when the Civil War happened, Japan was experiencing wars in the closing period of the Tokugawa/ Edo era. So what we may experience in the 2020s that is 80 years after WWII might be a very tough time.
I believe what Jesus said 2000 years ago and what he is saying now are the same. The commandments are: wait for when the Lord comes back as we baptize the people all nations (Mat 28) and as we commune (Luke 22, I Cor. 11). But of course, for Baptism and Holy Communion to be meaningful, we must listen to the Word of God; doing so is also important part of our lives.
Listening to the Word of God, Holy Baptism, and Holy Communion commonly happen in Sunday services. I would like to conclude today’s message with the following words: Let’s continue to attend Sunday worship services and wait for the coming of Jesus. In spite of difficult times we may encounter in the future, true peace will come as we share Christ and allow His words to shape our lives. Amen.
